Despite it being the transition period between classes, a small crowd had somehow gathered to watch the miraculous spectacle that is, you guessed it, my making small talk in English with one of the resident English-speaking English teachers (if this seems redundant, think again), who hailed from New Zealand. (You'd think that they'd be tired of this by now, wouldn't you?)

After English grammar, (in which those around me kept interrupting the class to try to get me to correct the teacher's admittedly broken pronunciation) and chemistry (in which class was briefly halted as my humble worksheet with my moonrune handwriting on it was passed around the class), it was now time for PE, physical education. ...

Summer of 2011. Being the year of the earthquake, instead of glorious Akihabara Tokyo exchange students were relegated to various southern locations away from the Northeast. The luckier ones ended up in Osaka. I was, sadly, not one of them.
