Anyway, what would be better for use of plot armor? Enough to keep the heroes alive but barely, or give them plot armor that's incredibly thick?

Keep them barely alive. Let them suffer for your entertainment's sake! That's what fictional people are FOR! To suffer so that we may be amused!
