What the Beast's Lair means to me

Next Fic Chapter: Trinity VII: The Twilight

I recently got into a discussion that caused me to summarise, in effect, what the Beast's Lair means to me. I don't generally keep PMs, so I thought I'd share it here, with all of you. Some alterations have been made to protect my correspondent, and make it flow a little better as an independent statement.

One thing I've always liked is that as a community, we were never vitriolic, or utterly rigid about the way the canon should be. People didn't get torn down for writing Shiki/Ciel or Shiki/Akiha instead of Shiki/Arc, or Shirou/Ayako instead of Saber, Rin, or Sakura. OK, granted, certain people can occasionally seem like an exception, but even they're not the violently psychotic type you might get in, say, the Ranma 1/2 fandom - I've heard stories from other writers who left fanfic writing altogether for the treatment they gave.

Seven years ago, I walked into the original Beast's Lair with almost no Type-Moon knowledge except what I got from the Tsukihime anime, and what I could comprehend from EvoSpace's "Moonlit World" site. I wrote a romance anthology, which I had never done before, and was praised. I developed an original character, and got fan art of her - and when I revealed my grand work as an elaborately-planned self-insert, that most reviled (and understandably so) genre of fanfiction . . . They didn't mind.

I've never forgotten that this place was kind, that it welcomed me - and how deathly afraid I was when I first joined. I don't ever want to let this forum become a place where that's changed.

. . . And so, for that, I say "thank you, all" - and it's why I try to help as many people here as I can, as often as I can, and will continue to do so.

That makes me feel a little better about what I'm doing...

Yeah, for all the bitching, moaning, and drama, BL is a pretty good place.

All i can say is, as long as the writing's good, keep it coming.

Of most of the writers I know, you're prolly one of the top few i hold in high regard.

Of course, not bothering too much with the asshats who just insist on whatever they feel is canon, should be one of the major priorities to have, rather than get yourself down on it.

BL is the first online community I've ever joined (FB doesn't count), so I don't have much to compare, but I like it here a lot.

Also, you are an amazing writer, all of your stories are amazing (haven't finished trinity yet lol).

Beast's Lair is a very laid back community, as both fanbases and forums go. Easy to relax in, barring a few outliers.

I love this community too. Aiden has it right; I've printed some unpopular opinions here. I've yet to be flamed like I was in the first community I ever went to. I haven't been here as long as you, Kieran, (Just a little more than two years) but the fact that neither of us have left yet is a sign of BL's staying power. Even if I should lose all interest in TM, I'll still keep coming here.

I also feel like that's a community I myself -want- to be in, and it's a first one like that, and I've never willingly joined any others. And seeing as I'm yet to complain, I guess appreciating T-M comes to people that are mostly easily harmonized.

    Good luck.

As to the rest, I agree. This is a friendly place, and I like to try and keep it that way.

Me too. This place has been one of the most welcoming fourms I've ever been a part of on this internet. All of you put it in much better words then I could have.

Beast's Lair is a great place. And we're all glad to have a guy like you around in it. Thank you, and on a personal level, thank you for help mentoring me back in my early days with writing. I was kinda a youth back then, thanks for all your advice and help.
