in case you're wondering, i'm typing like this because of the problems mentioned in this post.

i don't know what's gone wrong with my keyboard. pressing shift plus p doesn't let me type a capital p anymore, it becomes a shortcut to the 'print document' window. shift i opens the html viewing window.

ctrl plus anything opens windows mail. i don't understand what is going wrong.

paint tool sai tells me that pressing my right ctrl key activates both the shift and ctrl keys somehow. sai also tells me that my left ctrl key activates only ctrl, but somehow this is also interpreted by the computer as a command to open windows mail since it promptly shows up when i try to use the left ctrl key.

i can't even use the question mark because shift plus slash produces nothing.

this problem is happening on my laptop, and the laptop's inbuilt keyboard works normally with no shortcut shenanigans but certain keys are not functioning on it so i have to use this external usb keyboard. its as if the devil has possessed this usb keyboard and is activating hotkeys/shortkeys. how do i disable it/

i think the problem is with the keyboard, since plugging it onto my desktop also causes the same forced hotkey problem to occur. my desktop has another usb keyboard plugged into it, but that keyboard does not experience any similar problem.

of note, it has nothing to do with stickykeys since stickykeys are disabled on both computers.

model number is KG-0851 and FCC ID is E8HKG-0851. it is a hp wireless keyboard.

Try using the Caps Lock key for capital letters. For the question mark, use Alt Gr + Q.

    That's just a workaround, I need a permanent solution. =\

Does your keyboard come with any drivers? If so, you might want to try re-installing them....

You sure you haven't accidentally changed the input mode or something?

Hmm, I've never seen something like that. Did you maybe change the settings on your keyboard to a different language or format?

Did Alt or Ctrl get stickied somehow? Also, why do you always have the worst luck with computers?

Went back to my desktop for now because it's easier to type until I get this issue solved.

Thanks, but although I know I have the worst luck for a whole lot of things, I think this is more because I spend a lot of time around computers.

Assuming a similar error encounter rate for everyone, I probably have a larger number of encounters and thus wind up seeing a proportionately larger number of problems. :\

Anyway, how would I undo a ctrl/alt sticky?

If that was the case, would it only be limited to only one keyboard?

How do I do that? Or rather, how do I change it back?

    It's plug and play.

If it's happening on only one keyboard but for multiple computers, then it's either a driver issue or the keyboard is broken and certain keys are getting pressed when you don't want them to be. Given what you said about the right ctrl key, my guess would be that your computer is treating a press of the shift key as a press of the ctrl key instead.

Drivers are programs that install themself (and are normally updated whenever you replug it in or done manually) when you plug it in (Either via USB or on some computers the port in the back near headphones and whatnot). I say this because I interpreted how you replied to Mike as you not fully understanding what a Driver was. He's saying you should try messing around by manually redownloading the drivers from the companies website (for instance if I had a Logitech Keyboard I would go to the Logitech website got to the support/download page select the keyboard and go to downloads and redownload the drivers and hopefully fix it).

If you know about this and I'm just stating the obvious ignore this post.

Well, if it's happening on multiple computers, then either the driver that it's updating to is broken, or else the keyboard itself is broken. I am suspecting the second, to be honest.

I thought of that too, but since the offset is consistent for both computers (right ctrl triggers shift + ctrl, and left ctrl always opens windows live mail) I think it might be some annoying ass keyboard 'feature' I accidentally turned on without realizing.

After inspecting the keyboard a couple times though I still have no idea how I might have triggered such a feature... and the manual got thrown out a long time ago too.

Broken Keyboard, its not a feature, its the keyboard malfunction, had this happen to an old one I used to have where I couldn't figure out why it was doing it and what could have done it.

Just fork over 20$ or so for a new one.

What keyboard is it? It would have to be an pretty high end keyboard to have something like that . (Unless it's just on a toggle switch or something in which case you'd have realised the problem pretty fast) It's probably just broken.

I replaced the keyboard on my Dell laptop using a $12 eBay replacement. I don't know what kind of laptop you're using, but I would suggest fixing the heart of the problem (physically broken keyboard) if you have the time to do so.

Mash your "ctrl" key, left and right one. Screw with it, move it around, press it couple times.

If you have Win7 and nothing else works, you can use the On-Screen Keyboard to type.

Had this issue a while back, but it sorted itself out for me (had a laptop then, 2-3 years old)

I think I found your problem.

Kidding aside, sounds to me that its a hardware issue than a software one. I think you better replace it or have it checked.

If it is a software one try reinstalling the drivers of the keyboard if any

It's obviously hardware issue by what happens out there with the hotkeys and other pc. I can write you a small program that would show what buttons are you pressing (so you can see what you're in fact pressing and what keys are stuck), you're in for it?
