Blogspot #07 - Nick enters the PC scene

Rate this Entry
Hello all! I hope you all had a merry Christmas!

I had a great time, and I hope you all did too.

For me, one of my gifts gave me the ability to now play modern games. I'm quite happy about that.
My only question is, what should I get? What do you have?

Now that I can play modern games, I do wonder, what should I get. I don't have too much money (about 15 dollars worth to spend), but I know I'll get them eventually, and I'll be able to play today's games with all of you.

What's the common games that every PC gamer who's worth his salt owns? What's the "must haves" that I should put on my list?

Ooh, ooh. Since you only have $15 to spend try out the Steam sale. Lots of good stuff there; indie games and other such games for a great price.
I personally would aim for TES: Oblivion Deluxe Game of the Year Edition.
I'm pretty sure that Sims 3 would also make a good chocie.

Go and get yourself FTL. it's quite good as long as you don't mind a bit of a challenge. You're the captain of a spaceship and you have full control over everything on your spaceship, from piloting the ship to door controls You're on the run from the big dogs, you can take your ship to one place but if you do the entire armada that's after you moves one step closer to you as well so you need to stay ahead of them, the thing that makes the game is the randomness of it, you can move your ship to a patch of space but you don't know what's out there, so you may stumble across an old derelict vessel or you may find space pirates and have to fight boarding parties etc.

The game literaly has no clear end, so the fun comes in starting a new playthrough and seeing what crazy shit you can find out there in space. It's on sale right now on steam but even at regular price the game is only 10 bucks and it's very good.

EDIT: something I forgot to add, The Walking Dead is on sale on Steam as well, $12.50 and recently called game of the year by many websites, magazines and of all places the Spike Videogame Awards, if those COD-loving fratboys actually consider it to be game of the year the game has to be awesome.

I've played episode 1 over PSN (thank you PS+), and I love it already. I'm holding off on The Walking Dead because I plan on buying the disk version. I want a masterpiece like this physically, not digitally.

And I'll check out FTL, and Oblivion. Thank you two.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna like it. I have a gamepass and I already own New Vegas (360), so I might try before I buy before I buy. I tried Morrowwind and I honestly didn't like it. I spent 30 minutes not knowing what the heck I was doing wandering around doing nothing. (I probably did something wrong I assume). I'll have to try before I buy Oblivion. Sims 3, I probably won't immediately, as I'm not a fan of those types of games (and don't have much money to spend).

Nope, that's Morrowind. But remember, you're on the PC now! If there's some aspect of Oblivion that you're not crazy about, chances are there's a mod out there that addresses it.

    Dark Souls.

Wait no you already have Dark Souls. Spec Ops: The Line.
  7. Nicktendonick's Avatar
I don't have the PC version of it though. I'll get it when it depending on the funds I have.

But I am kinda torn between three deals.

Two Amazon deals for 10 bucks
one of Duke Nukem Forever, Borderlands 1 GOTY, and Darkness 2 (a game I've wanted to play)
one of Bioshock 1,2 (already own) and Spec ops: The line deal,
Or the sonic bundle for 25 dollars. Mostly for Sega racing, Sonic 4, and Sonic Generations.

    Don't know what to choose
  8. Mcjon01's Avatar
I'd go with the two Amazon deals. More meat for less money. The only thing that's really worth it in the Sonic pack is Generations, everything else is either mediocre (Sonic 4) or an old game that you could just emulate if you really wanted to play it. And Generations, as good as it is, is pretty short.

Depends heavily on what you like, but Steam is currently running all sorts of sales (through January 5th) on hundreds of games.

Check out what's on offer, especially the indie titles, as those tend to be far cheaper than your AAA ones.

As for recommendations? I'd really have to know what you like, but I second The Elder Scrolls series. Mass Effect is also a no-brainer.
  10. Nicktendonick's Avatar
    I got mass effect 1, 2 and 3 all on 360. That's taken already.

Dark Souls is part of Amazon's editor's choice, so any amazon game I get will make Dark Souls cheaper.
On the other hand I do need more money for all of this too first. I'm looking at GOG and I see a group of games I really want too.

Witcher 2 for 12 bucks, Planetscape for 5, Advent Rising for 3, and Cryostasis for 5 (totally 24 bucks).

Gah. Too little money, too little time, so many choices.
  11. Nicktendonick's Avatar
    Ok, so I just splurged.

    I spend 12 ish dollars.

Right now, Left 4 Dead 1+2 are 8 dollars. Bought it up, then bought up Just cause 2 +DLC for 5 for no just cause (XD. Impulse buy).

    So that now makes...

Castle Crashers, Left 4 Dead 2, Just Cause 2. About 18 dollars spent sofar. And this is minus all the indie humble bundles, the THQ bundles, and older games I own.

    Borderlands 1 / Darkness 2/ Duke for 10
Bioshock 1+2 / Spec Ops The Line for 10
Darkness Within 1 for 2.50 (it caught my eye, and if I want Dark Souls I might as well. I'd save a net 2 dollars if I did)
    Witcher 2 for 12
    Planetscape for 5
    Advent Rising for 3
    Cryostasis for 5
FTL Faster then light on GOG for 8 dollars.
Dark souls for 18 (with 5 off if I get the first three bundles)
Prince Of Persia collection for 12 (I don't think I'll get this one. It'll happen again)

Around 70 dollars total I think. Definitely not enough money for all of that.

Just Cause 2 is lots of chaotic fun, but don't expect it to be deep. It's literally a game about running around and blowing shit up.

Borderlands 1 is good, but Borderlands 2 makes it look silly. (However, that game will definitely not be as cheap.) Make sure you get the GOTY version that comes with all DLC.

    Bioshocks are no-brainer.

Witcher 2 is rather good too from what I hear. (Own it, but yet to play it.) Be warned, that'll probably stress your computer more than most games.

Also, Just Cause 2 is a DX10-only game, so you need to be on Vista, Win7, or Win8 to play it. XP is verboten. (Your videocard should support DX10 easily as that's been standard for at least the last five years.)
  13. Raven2785's Avatar
I agree with Darples, the Bioshock pack is a no-brainer, and to top it off, you get Spec Ops: The Line, one of the best games I've played this year.
  14. Nicktendonick's Avatar
Well, this thing is quite new, so that just might be able to play Witcher 2.

    Windows 8.
    Intel Core I5 (3210M)
    15.6 inch LED HD
    Shared VRAM
    6 Gigs of memory DDR3 1600 MGz/4G*1+2G*1 (ok, I don't get everything past the DDR3)
750 Gig HDD (5.4 SATA? what is that?)
ODD: Super Multi Dual Layer (SATA) what is this?

    ----------------

I've herd so much from Spec Ops: The line, but how is the replayablity?

My main thing is that every penny counts. I have a few dollars to spend, and what I get has to last me and be something I don't spend 30 bucks on, beat once, and then never touch it again. What I buy with my slim dollars I have to make last (like Left 4 Dead, for example).

Borderlands 2, I was originally going to buy it (still have my preorder sitting), but instead, I'm planning on waiting till it's all DLC version comes out and snag it all while I play everything else. If I buy it, It'll be the vanilla version and later upgrade.

Borderlands 1 GOTY, of course. It's easier on PS3. You can simply get Vanilla, rent GOTY and install the DLC, and return it.

I already own Bioshock 1 on 360, and I have Bioshock 2 over PS+, so Spec Ops: The line is the only new game. I'm not much of the multiplayer guy, I dislike the COD style multiplayer of "fun and shoot and kill and blah and die and respaw-Ha die again". How is Spec Ops's multiplayer?

I own Borderlands 1 (GOTY) over PS+. I don't have Duke, but I hear it's a ok game that's funny and entertaining; Darkness 2 I've wanted to play as well, loved the Demo.

Witcher 2 I want if I can run it.

Cryostasis and FTL I want to buy as well. Two enjoyable games both on sale (I'll get the GOG versions)

I have the Xbox version of Advent Rising. I'm not sure if the differences are so great it's worth buying it.

I love Dark Souls....but will I really go through it again? It's the exact game I have on 360, so the only part of it I'd get would be PVP.
And would I really go through all that again? Legit-ly, and spend countless hours grudging through this game again? I already own the 360 version, there's no heavy PC modding yet, and there's a save editor for the 360 (so I can make as many challenge runs as I like.). Through, if the amazon $5 towards Editor's choice games (Dark souls is one of them), I can buy one of those 10 buck deals, the darkness within game, and then pay 8 more bucks for Dks PC.

Prince of Persia, I'll be waiting till later.

Spec Ops is not about the multiplayer, the great, big shinning spot about that game is the single-player campaign, I won't spoil it for you anymore, but it's the complete opposite of COD's thrill-action-rollercoaster thing that every FPS is trying (and failing) to emulate. In essence it makes sense to pack it with the Bioshocks, since just like both of those games it's an experience more than a mere videogame.
  16. Nicktendonick's Avatar
I read the tropes on It a while back and that's why I'm so interested by it. I know exactly what I'll be signing up for. Unlike Spec. Ops: The Line's "hero".

I just want to know. is it worth more then one playthrough (aside from, replay the final level and see a different ending), and is the means of replaying it, such as multiplayer, any bit good.

I have a blockbuster rental pass. If it's a no replay game, then I rent beat and return, and wait to own a physical copy of that title for cheap (like I did for Bioshock, and am doing for Walking Dead)

    --------

And on a Personal note, I do enjoy those rollercoaster moments found in things like COD (and Resident Evil 6). They add a very nice shine to the game when done rightly (when done poorly or tied with annoying QTEs it can kill the moment. When done right they add a great layer of tension)

Well, the creator of the game abhors the fact that it comes with multiplayer, and it's basically an outsourced rushjob that violates the spirit of every single thing they tried to do with the single player campaign and retroactively cheapens the experience by playing it. So that should tell you everything you need to know about Spec Ops multiplayer.
  18. Nicktendonick's Avatar
    indeed it does.
  19. Mcjon01's Avatar
And wait, does this laptop have a dedicated video card? Or just the integrated one on the i5 chip? Because that's important. If it's the latter, for instance, you're not going to be playing anything like Witcher 2 anytime soon.
  20. Mcjon01's Avatar
Though if you're interested, GreenManGaming has SpecOps on sale for 75% today. You're not likely to see a lower price than that for a long, long time. Especially not if you plan to buy a physical copy, since the Steamworks DRM means you have to buy it new.
