Beam's Blog of Writing and Other Things.

Lesbians (Or Why Everything I Write Is Usually Gay).

Rate this Entry
Some of you may remember this lovely little line from the Afterword of Shinderella, as said by Moczo himself:

... Your mind is just 'YuriYuriYuriYuriYuriYuri', isn't it?
And sad to say, it is true. Mostly because seriously, this man is my best friend, he knows my mind far too well.

But yes, you all may have noticed by now the shocking number of lesbians in most of my work. And as much as I would like to say that it's because I secretly hate het, it's.... really just that way because I happen to really like writing about girls in love. It all started when I saw Kannazuki no Miko at about the age of sixteen or seventeen, and joining the Nanoha fandom probably didn't help.

(I do, on the other hand, have mixed emotions on yaoi. But that's mostly due to a friend in high school who was yaoi-crazy, and overdosed me on the stuff.)

As for why I write about FSN lesbians, well... besides the fact that Nasu makes it far, far too easy for me (seriously! So much subtext! And Sakura and Rin are supposed to be sisters!), I admit that it's honestly because I find the ladies of FSN fascinating (yes, even Sakura), and Shirou.... well. Um. Kind of hopelessly boring. Which isn't his fault, he's an H-game protagonist, he kind of has to be a blank slate for you to project onto him, but it makes writing him very difficult to do otherwise because my overall opinion of him is 'Meh'.

Not to say I dislike him, I like him a lot. And I've written him with Rin a few times. I just find it far more fun to pair the ladies off with each other.

So, yes. I write gay stuff. I will probably continue to write gay stuff.

Why stop now?

If you're good at it... no reason to really stop.

"Boring"...fair enough then. Maybe I just don't relate to him much at all, so I don't see it that way. *shrugs*

Oh man, I still need to finish KnM so badly. And get the entire thing too >_>

If Beam stops writing yuri, Sun-chan will be a sad panda.

Honestly, I'd been thinking that slightly more het popping up in your works recently. I take it from this that it's a fluctuation more than a trend, yes? (Not, honestly, that I'm particularly bothered either way - as long as the stuff's well written, which yours most definitely is).

And yet he's actually much better than lots of other protagonists. At least Nasu talked about him being a bit of a 'blank slate', and he had a certain amount of extra personality beyond the usual lolthisiswhatthewriterthinksallotakucanrelateto (laziness, perversion etc.).

It all depends on what idea comes to me when, honestly. Like right now, I have this undying urge to write some Rin/Proto!Archer and Ayaka/Proto!Lancer. While also wanting to expand on Rin/Misaya. So it really all depends on what I'm inspired to write at any one moment. I don't discriminate.

Oh, he's definitely much better. I do think he's a likable guy, I just find him a bit boring for my tastes when it comes to writing.

Since I have been following since your Nanoha days, my mind now does RadiantBeam = yuri no exceptions. And hey you enjoy it so there's nothing bad about it.

Now on the Shirou being boring thing... eeh I am gonna disagree on that but I can see why people see him that way so eeeh.

I'd complain more if you weren't so good at writing them. So write on, young yuri nut, write on. XD

... that said, I'm not going to stop teasing you about this. Ever. At all. We will be old folks languishing in our nursing home together talking about the latest shows, and I will still be teasing you about this. But you knew that.

KnM huh? Remembering that scene from the end of episode one never fails to bring a smile to my lips. Ehehehehe.

    "I WILL PROTECT YOU!"
"That's great. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm making out with my girlfriend over here."

Not sure if that's a joke about Shirou, or a comment on KnM, Seika. Don't know the series. *shrugs*

Also, for the "Granfatherly Gifts" storyline...ideas are popping into my head like crazy about the Shirou x Ayaka stuff. But I can't write any of it well enough to do it justice.
But that's not yuri or lesbians.
    Does this mean I need to burn? ;w;

    Here.

It's great, he's being the OTT shounen action hero, trying to protect Himeko and screaming out her name, whilst Chikane's actually kissing her in the background. It's too funny how oblivious he is.

    Ah, alright.

Oh God, Kannazuki no Miko. Poor guy, he was treated so cruelly. So sad, I tell you. XD

But anyway, as long as you enjoy it, there should be no reason to complain, right? And it makes you pump out quality content, so there's really no reason for argument. Just, have fun writing! I'm fairly sure everyone else is having fun reading it.

Nothing wrong with a little yuri here and there, but subtext is subtext, and while it can make for interesting pairings, googles do color our perceptions more one way than another, I've had that happen a couple times. And the yuri goggles in the Nanoha fandom, whoo boy.

Shirou is actually a pretty interesting protagonist, mainly because he *isn't* a blank slate, thisjust happen to be what he thinks of himself as. Rin points out in UBW and it's shown again in HF that he, while he thinks of himself that way, has too many goals, aspirations, and desires to actually be empty. IMO of course.

Meh. There's degrees of subtext. And given not only the level of subtext within the show (sharing a bed, raising a child together), but all the outside factors - the seiyuu have made a running joke of the characters' love for each other - I think it's not really a matter of 'yuri goggles'. It's only subtext, but it is also very obviously there.

Not, I'm happy to concede, that one should mistake this for actual canon. There isn't an explicit statement of their relationship, and I believe the question has generally been avoided by everyone involved in production except the seiyuu. Nevertheless, I made the point before that a show doesn't require explicit on-screen confirmation of a fact for it to be blindingly evident (not, you understand, that I am going so far as to actually call Nanoha/Fate 'blindingly evident'). Even more than that, a lot of the fun of reading or watching or listening to some piece of art is looking beyond the surface and the specific details given. Only an author who horrifically violates 'show, don't tell' leaves nothing left unsaid, nothing to be interpreted.

How should I put this, then? If one were to argue 'ships in the Nanoha anime series, there's not a lot one can say outright about any of the main characters. But when we resort to the subtext of the show, Nanoha/Fate has a lot more backing than most of the other possibilites.

*sees that NanoFate is being discussed*
...well, at least it seems that both of you acknowledge that it's major subtext, but isn't what the NanoFate fan-tards say it is (i.e. canon, and any other pairings for either of them are explicitly evil in nature).
  19. SeiKeo's Avatar
Bro, don't you know? Yuri is always 67% more canon than other ships.

    Leo, please don't start. I can take jokes about some things, but this subject just makes me have a serious headache and want to punch people in the face. ^^;
