Fic List

Rate this Entry
Making a list of Nasuverse fic I've been intending to write, because putting it down might actually force me to do it. Without further ado, a list of my planned works; in no particular order, everything subject to change. Hopefully to be updated as I progress.

Upcoming:
Rejoice, Emiya - FSN, servantswap. Counter Guardian EMIYA has finally been summoned into the Fifth Grail War, giving him the chance to eliminate his younger self. There's just one problem: his master isn't Rin, but Kirei.
Untitled - FSN, post-UBW True. Shirou may have been saved from collapsing under the weight of his ideals, and Rin may have been saved from her lonely life as a magus, but not everyone was so lucky. Shinji, Sakura, and those the Fifth Holy Grail War left behind.
Emptiness Tendency - KNK x JJBA crossover. Shiki Ryougi awakens from a two-year coma to find herself hyper-aware of her breathing, and with a woman she's never seen before by her bedside. The stranger, calling herself Touko, tells her that the accident awakened the Hamon powers latent in her bloodline, and offers her the chance to train. Wanting to know more about the occurrence which gave her such power at the cost of her brother's existence, Shiki accepts. Yet working with Touko brings the girl into contact with her employee Mikiya, as strangely familiar as he is unplaceable. And at the same time, an ancient evil begins to stir...

That's probably my favourite of them, too, which is why it's my highest priority. I just need to sit down and knock out a prologue, because starting is likely going to be the hardest part.

    "Rin/Shinji fic"

W-wait. Is Shinji going to steal Rin from Shirou?

I don't see the connection between "Shinji trying to make up for his past behavior" and a post-UBW fic where Shirou and Rin aren't in a relationship.
And a JJBA fic that just transplants the plot of parts I and/or II with different characters? Meh.

Not even going to lie: this fic idea was mostly born from a burning need for Hamon master Touko.

As much as I like UBW, I've never really bought into Rin/Shirou as a lasting romantic relationship (although I can believe in them as close friends who had sex once, which still legitimates them going to the Clock Tower together imo). For one, it has the most downplayed romance arc of any route; his feelings for her aren't really a driving plot factor, especially next to HF, and I can't think of anything he does in regards to her which he wouldn't also have done platonically. More importantly, to me it feels like Rin would stagnate in that relationship, because being with Shirou wouldn't push her as either a magus or a person. Like, she'll be good for him (as Archer says before he vanishes), but what is he going to do for her? Not much, in my opinion. I'm not exactly holding Shinji up as Rin's ideal romantic partner - I think she's best shipped with Archer any day of the week, because they would actually challenge each other and they both need that - but I think it'd still maybe be a more interesting (if not mutually-benefiting) dynamic than with Shirou.
I realise this all reads more like personal interpretation than anything ("this works because headcanon!"), but I'll swing it somehow. That said, I'm still just kicking this idea around, and it may or may not actually come to anything. Setting is subject to change too, but I'm not sure I can get away with it in a fluffy nothing-hurts AU, mostly because Shinji has no incentive to try and be better without going through something like becoming a huge lump of flesh.

And a JJBA fic that just transplants the plot of parts I and/or II with different characters? Meh.
You know what? I think that's a really boring premise too, which is why I'm not planning to do a straight lift from one series to the other. My ultimate goal is more to marry the themes in KNK with the lore and outright bullshit of JJBA, taking a plot somewhere between them.

in HA we learn that not only are rin and shirou together three and a half years after UBW, but rin is super lovey dovey. at worst, thats one path it can go, though its heavily implied to be one of the more likely events, if indeed there are other ways things go.

Dang, knew I should've played Hollow (and I still will, hopefully), because arguing headcanon against canon is hard. Adding to my earlier points, though... again, that requires way too much suspension of disbelief for me. It's hard enough for me to feel like Shirou would meet Rin's needs for one year, let alone three. Maybe I just haven't read enough fic of this pairing, but I really don't see what he brings to the table for her in particular - he doesn't help her open up hugely like he does Saber, or help and protect her like he does Sakura - and I struggle to see a future for them which doesn't lead to Rin being stifled and unhappy. That just seems like natural endgame to me, although it could take any amount of time to get there.

I always thought it the other way around, with Rin being the one to support Shirou and prevent him from becoming Archer?

That's the thing - she supports him, but it doesn't feel like a mutual thing. I'd imagine she does a lot more for him than he does for her.

Well, what about Saber or Sakura, then? Saber's a bit easier than Sakura, as she basically embodies his ideal (but not that much else), but Sakura, she basically serves as just someone he wants to protect, the end.

And from UBW, Rin's "conflict" is basically "I'm a magus, and thus supposed to be inhuman/cruel/etc.", but her actual nature contradicts that. Shirou's presence helps her retain her humanity, stop her from diving down the deep end, and so on. In that way, I don't see much of a difference between Shirou and Rin's romance versus Shirou and Sakura, other than the roles are reversed, and Rin has something to actively protect him from.

You are getting it backwards you know. You seem to think Rin needs someone to push her forward and get her to be all she can be, thats actually not the case, or at least, not what she gets from shirou, and not what she flat out says she needs either. Rin doesn't need someone to push her, she does that herself, she needs someone to get her to calm down. Rin goes all out and this results in her fucking up at the worst possible times, Nasu actually has a name for this, Rin's goof up girl trait. Shirou is a steadying presence that allows her to set herself and not over react.

I don't want to discourage the idea. I like the theme of an ex-villain trying to make up for past actions (though I think in this case the real struggle would be overcoming his own selfish nature).

@Kirby/Tobias: man, it sure is evident that I need to go back and replay the VN, huh? I must be making a real fool out of myself <_<
There's something about the whole "Shirou is a calming presence for Rin" thing which still kinda feels a bit like her settling to me, but yeah, I'd forgotten the fact that they help and let each other be human (which is, ironically, why I like them much better as close friends). I think I'd been letting my biases get the better of me (read: I realised that my preferred Rin/Archer ship was too heavily colouring my perspective on Rin/Shirou), so I appreciate the canon reminders. It's good to be pulled up every once in a while, haha.
(As a side note, I prefer Shirou left unpaired, because none of his ships with the heroines hold much appeal for me. I'd rather see him as friends/comrades with both Rin and Saber, and I'm not sure what to think about Sakura because in general I don't feel much for her.)

@Walnut Sparks: the real drawcard for me about post-UBW Shinji is that, even if he decides to change his ways, he faces two uphill struggles in the forms of a) the fact that personal change isn't easy, especially if you're starting from a place of being deeply selfish, and b) nobody else buying it, because even the charitable Shirou realises he's kind of awful.

Actually, now that I think about it, I should probably plan that story as a Shinji-centric attempt at character development, with any ship either being secondary or popping up further down the line. Best not to restrict myself so early on, anyway, and I'm glad people picked apart my idea so that I could get to the crux of what I really want to write. Really and unsarcastically, thanks for the input and criticism.

The first one holds promise if only because Emiya trolling is some of the best trolling Kotomine can do. The prospect of Lancer and Rin hijinks would be a big bonus.

Hamon Ryougi would be great, especially if it pits the KnK crew against JJBA baddies. Araya would still be after her, which could make for a great disaster as Shiki and friends, the JJBA crowd and Araya's plot all collide at breakneck speed.

I've always had a soft spot for the Lancer/Rin dynamic, so when I thought about a servantswap fic with that partnership I immediately jumped to "holy shit, what if Kirei summons EMIYA". I figure it'll alternate chapters between Rin and Archer so we get the best of both worlds... that is, when I get round to it. Writing an entire Holy Grail War is an intimidating task, and will need a lot more planning than I've currently done.

The issue with JJBA baddies is that I just don't think the Pillar Men are especially interesting villains (barring maybe Wamuu, and I still wouldn't put him on par with any of Araya's people.) I was thinking I could just transpose KNK villains and give them Modes based off their powers/origins, but your idea is too damn excellent to overlook - three separate factions sounds like way more fun, and I could still probably make it all work within JJBA lore.
The other idea would be to mix and match parts: for example, Kira would be a great fit as a boss of sorts (especially because Shiki and Touko would be inclined to overlook "mundane" serial killings), and now that I think about it, I would love to pit Araya against Pucci. The only problem is that Hamon is pretty useless against Stands: not only would I prefer Shiki with Hamon, but I also definitely don't feel like I'm up to creating those on Araki's level. More thought required, I guess.
