My "Improved" Guide for Making Servants

Rate this Entry
As its been a while, I thought I'd remake this guide for a bit of fun and self-reference. Note this is a non-serious guide and the word "Rule" should be taken lightly. Feel free to leave complaints in the comments below :P

Age of Whatever:
General rule of thumb. BC = Age of Gods, AD = Age of Man. Some islands maintained mystery over time which took longer to lose like Britain.

Attributes:
This is a way of categorising servants outside of classes.

  • Man - Heroic Spirits born in the Age of Man. Some are regular people who attained greatness while some may have been genuinely superhuman.

  • Sky - Heroic Spirits connected to the divine. They may be humans descended from gods, created by gods, avatars or even aspects of gods.
  • Earth -These heroic spirits are those who originate in folklore or if their historical records are dubious.
  • Star - These heroic spirits are icons who overcame great trouble and started revolutions that changed the entire world. In addition, the seem to oppose those of the "Beast" catagory.
  • Beast - This belongs to the 'Beast' servants, seven servants that exist to oppose humanity.

The "Rules":

Noble Phantasms
These are the crystallisation of s Servants legend, every servant has one. If you can't think of one then the figure in question probably isn't eligible.

When you come across various figures you like, whether they be historical, mythological or whatever you may have trouble coming up with a Noble Phantasm or they seem too weak. If this is the case, you shouldn't be afraid to muddle history a little bit or outright make things up. As awesome as Iskander was, he didn't have the ability to summon an army in life. You can look at various feats and conceptualise them. Just be sure to give them a distinct limitation to prevent overwank.

Also, most servants have one or two Noble Phantasms. Sometimes even three. Five is considered a very high number and the likes of Astolfo and Perseus have low parameters to balance it out. Also justify why they have them, one well thought out Noble Phantasm is better then three poor ones.

Powerlevels
Power levels are dumb.

We all should know this. However there are a few things to keep in mind; Gilgamesh is canonically the most powerful servant. You can those comparable in power to him, you can have some who are built to counter and beat him whilst being weaker but on paper they should not be more powerful. If so, something has gone wrong. Look at your servant you're making and look at counterparts while keeping track of the known heavy hitters.

Also regarding EX's they are conceptual levels they cannot be measured. As they ascend scaling, they must be used carefully.

Skills

Cu Chulainn isn't overly powerful but due to his diverse abilities, even Gilgamesh had trouble putting him down. Therefore don't give your servant too many. Your servant should have a maximum of five personal skills and certainly not a number like 10. However keep in mind the class skills too, if the class has two or three set skills then give them no more than three or four.

But how will anyone know my Servant is cool if I don't give him Saber-level stats and at least one EX-rank Noble Phantasm?

Ha. I haven't even gotten into the EX rule (which I cannot be bothered to write at the moment)

Whelp I have definitely broken a few of these rules

Pfft, it's fine, I'm just very paranoid about making ridiculously overpowered characters.

I always got the impression most Servants should be around Cu, Diarmuid, EMIYA and Robin's levels. It just so happens that Stay Night, Zero, Apocrypha, etc. tend to go straight for heavyweights like Gilgamesh, King Arthur, Herc, Achilles, etc.

Like all things, servants are susceptible to the "power creep" - like in Grand Order for example. In an attempt to make the new characters relevant in terms of power, their abilities increase over time until the original heavyweights are overshadowed.

EX is meaningless now so go hog wild. Also, up until GO the "1 NP is average or normal" thing was bullshit. And will probably continue to be if the GO servants get expanded upon in other sources that don't have the mechanical restrictions of a game going on. 2-3 NPs is totally fine if it's justified. But if not then a single really nice thought-out NP is better than trying to cram in NPs that a Servant shouldn't have.

I dislike just throwing out extra Noble Phantasms and EX's for the sake of it.

Also you might want to change the Cu rule to the George rule, because George originally had a grand total of 7 skills

That rule is regarding personal skills, George had 5 in his original design but that was his unfinished prototype stage, in the Grand Order release it was reduced to 3 personal skills.

how do you know that they weren't just removed for gameplay purposes and will be added back when his profile comes out?

Tbh it's really odd why people would put Divinity on a Christian saint, seeing as the belief is that only God is explicitly divine in nature.

Saw you changed the name of the link here in your sig to "poor and soon-to-be remade guide." What are you thinking of revising/changing about it?

Just adding in new GO info?

Revisions to 'rules' and changing the overall structure.
I made it a while ago not long after I joined BL so frankly it could use an update.
