Outside Reading List

Rate this Entry
I asked for some book recommendations in the book thread, and I got several, so before they get buried I decided to make a list of what I had been recommended. I guess I'll also keep track of anything else that is interesting I happen to read here, too, but we'll see.

Recommendations by other BL members:

Moon People by Dale M. Courtney - recommended by Shrapnel Read: [ ]

Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke - recommended by LJ3, Gaia Read: [ ]

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy - recommended by Dullahan Read: [ ]

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul by Douglas Adams - recommended by Dullahan Read: [ ]

Foundation by Isaac Asimov - recommended by Frostyvale Read: [ ]

Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson - recommended by Leo Read: [ ]

The Foundation series was always good. I could never get enough of Asimov's stories.

That's a pretty good scifi section you managed to get recommended into.

I know he's prolific, and I think I read some in high school, but I can't remember which or what, so I'll look into this.

Yes, I really appreciate that several people responded like this. It's funny how it all turned out to be scifi, but I guess it's also not surprising given that I kind of want to read fiction that has something to say.

This list reminds me that I should get back to reading more at some point. I used to read constantly.

I couldn't get into The Foundation series. I found it sounding very weird in my head in Russian. I wonder if it'll be better in English.

He wrote a ton of short stories. Foundation is a longer series, but I think I like the short stories better. It's easy to find some of his anthologies.

So update here is that I went to my public library and it seems that literally the only book they have on this list is Blood Meridian, and even if I had money I don't have space for a bunch of book ownership. Oh, they had the second Dirk Gently book but not the first, and another local library has it, but the catalog no longer seems to have a request option, so I really don't know why we can search all local libraries. Depressing.

I envy the fact that you actually live near a public library.

I do live in a small city but it is actually a city. But this service isn't helping me much when they don't have but one of seven books I tried. I think it's a decent source of outdated nonfiction and historical stuff but their fiction section seems pretty lean in a way I didn't realize.
