This seems to run counter to the word 'refuse' in your title, especially if one's classification of a poster as 'refusing' is based on long experience that they genuinely won't read the material in spite of on-going pressure from several quarters.

It's well enough to take the moral high ground, but when it'll do no good and you know it'll do no good, it comes to seem like more of a show than a principled position.

Mind, my typical answer for this situation is generally a post with more than my usual excess of italics, stressing both my bafflement and irritation. The outcome of which is no more helpful to the subject or the forum, serving only to relieve a little of my blood pressure and win Internet Argument points from surrounding observers. So I suppose I haven't much room to talk.

I guess, but You seems like a nice dude who I haven't really seen be mean to someone.

I think the answer is not spoon feeding, not insulting, not discussing, just post a link and leave.
even if doesn't solve anything, at least you won't have any regrets.
also it cuts the conversation until xyz reads it because no one is responding so no dogpiling.
    Basically creating a roadblock
