668 - Neighbor of the Beast

Easy come, easy go.

Decided the time was about right to buy a PSP.

Why?

Well...
  • There's still no good emulators for it. At all. Save for one, which is coded in Java.
  • With the Vita coming out, Sony is almost definitely going to try to kill it within the next 9-18 months.
  • I still want to play Fate/EXTRA. And will hope that Fate/Extra CCC gets translated stateside.
  • Ultimately, my DS Lite is a bit worn out.
  • Still want to play the Disgaeas, too. (Though I have the second one legitly for PS2). The DS port of Disgaea 1 is just... bland, and there is no DS port of Disgaea 2. There's also obviously no port, period, for Disgaea Infinite.

So I just went and blew $600 on the unit, some accessories (Extended battery is a must, for example) and nine games. Yes, nine: All three Disgaea titles (including Infinite) off eBay, and from NewEgg, Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood!; Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max; Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror; Gran Turismo; Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker... and Fate/EXTRA Limited Edition (the priciest game I bought at $40).

...Oh yeah, and I bought a 32 GB Memory Stick Duo, which was nearly a C in itself. For y'know... homebrew purposes.

Still, glad I'll finally get to play it. I've avoided LPs of it for a good reason. And it'll do a lot of other stuff once I homebrew it too, so really, it simply took some years for it to transition from "want" to "need" but that finally occurred.

Only question is if it'll get here on Friday, or if I'll have to wait for Monday. I know for almost a fact that my NewEgg stuff won't arrive until Monday, given that UPS does not ship on Weekends. The Disgaeas were gotten with Saver shipping (they're not critical after all) so that may be up until next Wednesday. The NewEgg stuff is technically 2-3 day shipping, and Sony's online store (where I got the PSP and accessories from) estimated it'd ship by 4/6. (It'll also need a signature... bleh. Hopefully they don't mind my brother signing for it, considering he's 14 and all, since I doubt my work will be too happy with me staying home to do so myself.)

So I guess it means my DS gets one more week, approximately, with me before I semi-retire it. Which is good, as I'm somewhat sick of playing just Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary... although there's a version of that for the PSP that I can track down too, heh.

Feli won't be forgotten... she'll just be moving to a new home. ♥

I think Disgaea 1 on the DS is actually better than the one on PSP.

If I'm not mistaken, the DS version is a port of the PSP version with additional content.

    Still, enjoy your PSP! ^^

You may want to pick up Lunar: Silver Star Harmony for the PSP, too. Great game series, but they nerfed the dungeons a bit.
Also, look into signed homebrew. It'll run no matter what you're running for firmware on your psp. Just some of it won't run everything we'd want it to...
    Spoiler:
    Super Mario RPG for example

Sad but true: I've yet to play a Persona game. Ever.

I do have ISOs of them for PS2, though... may get them for PSP as well though. I want to wait a little bit and break it in some first. I only intended to buy three games to start with and I ended up getting nine, after all.

(Plus I'd probably have to eBay those as well, and since I tend to not like getting used games without being able to examine their condition - something generally impossible with online buys - I tend to get new. All these games I got were new copies, which increases the prices.)

VERY Limited extra content. A few extra characters (Plenair is the only one who comes to my mind) and Prinny Commentary. That's about it. The DS version still looks muddy and washed-out somehow (given that the DS Lite can do 18-bit color, how did they manage to do this? The sprites should've been - if anything - 256 colors max each), and obviously, sound doesn't compare. Considering the washed-out look seriously pissed me off, that was part of why I decided to get the PSP version as well (ironically, it wound up costing me less than the DS version... though then again, I preordered the DS version).

Still, I actually legitly own the DS version as well - it's been unopened more or less since I bought it though, since I promptly put a dump of the cart onto my MicroSDHC for my DS Lite.

I really enjoyed Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (Bought the Working Designs deluxe edition for PS1 years ago) so that may not be a bad idea. I never did play the original, though.

Hmm, I'll have to look into that. I know for a fact there's SNES emulator homebrews... though it surely can't compare to the awesomeness of GOURMET SENTAI BARAYAROU!

The only beat-em-up which has a button that does nothing but make your character pose and, depending on who they are, either flex their muscles, show off a fan in their hair, or if you're the token chick, show off your ass.

This automatically makes it the best beat-em-up ever.

(And if you played Evospace's Type-A game, you now know where the "Gourmet Sentai Barashoujo" joke came from.)

You can always buy them digital if that is your thing. They are pretty cheap at this moment actually.
  6. Dark Pulse's Avatar
I may decide that, since the PSP does have that capability after all.

I emulate Extra quite nicely. :3c

I think you can get 3rd Birthday fairly cheap now, so I recommend giving it a try at some point. Monster Hunter or Gods Eater Burst are also fun. And if you like SRPGs, I'd also pick up FF Tactics (if your looking for something quick and a bit simple) or Tactics Ogre (if you want something a little more in depth).

There's probably more I could recommend, but those would be my top recommendations at the moment.

It really is kind of a shame I'll have to shelf my PSP for a Vita in a couple of months.

I don't want to use damn Java for a PSP emulator though. I understand Java is portable... but so is C++. It also doesn't have to go through an abstraction layer, unlike Java, so a C++ version of anything should beat a Java version, hands down, in terms of raw speed.

I could've gotten a Monster Hunter title (The second one?) among my picks of stuff, but I decided not to for now. I may look into it sometime, though.

SRPGs... well, come on, I just said I picked up Disgaea. Silly Sei. I liked them before most people knew what they were (You're talking to a Shining Force and Ogre Battle veteran here) so I'll be sure to expand that line in the future.

I would have gotten Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, but from what I heard, it didn't add much compared to the PS1 version, and it was based on the Japanese version anyway, so it actually LOSES some things the US PS1 version had. Since I plan to run PS1 stuff on that (and I actually legitly own the PS1 version of the game - best $25 I ever gave a friend in my life, considering how rare it is now!) I'll be sure to play it through that.

Also, an update: Main unit arrives tomorrow, apparently (stunningly, FedEx delivers on Saturdays) and even though I'm at work, there should be someone home to sign for it. The rest of the components (including my memory stick, and six of the the games)... Monday-Tuesday at best (the memory stick and most of the games will arrive at the same time... in five packages due to NewEgg shipping it from five different warehouses...), roughly next Wednesday for my three Disgaea titles, and possibly up to next THURSDAY, the 12th, for the components including the extended battery. Ouch!

Three different carriers, too - FedEx for the unit/accessories, UPS for most of the games/memory stick/screen protectors, USPS for the three games I got off eBay.

That may mean four days of consecutive deliveries. Sheesh. Let's hope UPS realizes five shipments are going to the same address, since one shipment (Which sadly didn't contain the memory stick nor Fate/EXTRA) was marked to be delivered a day early, on Monday. Then again, I also doubt they're smart enough to realize that.

I didn't like the Persona game I picked up, much, honestly. The very first one, though it seemed ok for gameplay, kinda... well. The main overworld theme, going on over and over and over... just kinda didn't impress me much.

Disgaea on PSP was quite fun. I own quite a few of the games. 1 and 2 for PS2, PSP, Makai Kingdom for PS2, Prinny 1 for PSP, Disgaea 3 for PSP... and I've got Cross Edge for PS3, too. On the other side, I never got a DS, so... *shrugs*

Lunar SSSC was pretty good, honestly. The remake's good, but I liked the PS1 game's voices more. Lunar 2 WAS good.

Really... I've never heard the joke before. I'll have to look that up, later, when I have more time.

On a different note, it looks like I was wrong about the PSP not having a Decent SNES Emulator.

    Spoiler:
http://psp.dashhacks.com/2011/10/20/...a-3-signed-ofw Came out this week, and it can handle all games easily, even if you have to adjust some games for frameskip. Hope that helps you out a lot!

...Wait, Disgaea 3 came out on PSP? I thought it was coming out on PSP Vita.

Also, they tried to deliver the PSP today, but by the time someone got to the door (as I was at work...), they were pulling away.

    All together, now:

    FUCK YOU, WORK.

(...Though admittedly, it would've just been the unit and one of the cables. I kind of can't do anything with it without at least a game and the memory stick, which is still set to come Monday or Tuesday anyway. UPS is being pretty damn coy about updating four of the five packages, but the fifth is to be delivered on Monday.)

Yeah Disgaea 3 is Vita only. Characters from 3 however appear in the port for 2.

Also @RanmaBushiko Persona (1) is a hit or miss game but P2 and P3P are pretty cool games. If a little harder than most JRPGs.

Uuuugh. Why is the PSP so fucking expensive? I'd have played Fate/Extra already if it were reasonably priced.

I was relisting all my Disgaea games, lol. I wish it had been released on PSP, though.

I don't have the cash for a Vita... and honestly, a system where you CAN'T replace the battery? I dunno about that one... I honestly don't. I have to call bullshit on that, seriously.

The PSP itself is only about $130 - not very expensive at all. Of course, this is the core unit with no Memory Stick whatsoever, and you pretty much need that. Depending on what size you get, that will run another $15-100. I've never believed in doing things small (That's what she said) so I got a 32 GB stick that added another $100 or so. The PSP and memory stick itself are about 40% of the total cost, the games are probably about another 40% (to be fair, I bought nine of them...) and the remainder is accessories, etc. Fate/EXTRA also came in two editions. The limited edition (which I got) is $40. The standard edition is about the same price as your typical PSP Game, $27.99.

Though naturally, the PSP Vita is another beast entirely.

Still, this is far from unaffordable, if you don't go nuts on games and get a good-sized memory stick. I'd recommend at least a 8 GB, if not a 16 GB, as besides game saves, the stick is also to hold music, movies, and some games (like Gran Turismo) will let you put data on the stick to reduce load times.

......Of course, I plan to use my stick to literally hold my games, but that's something else entirely.

Hardware hackers will probably figure this out eventually, I'm sure. But yeah, not fond of that, either. Li-Ion batteries do degrade eventually with time. It's definitely why my DSLite isn't getting a 15 hour charge anymore. If that were the only problem, I'd just replace the battery, but the case also took some damage from a fall in January 2011, the bottom screen is scuffed up, and as I just noticed, the top screen's brightness changes a bit when the hinge is opened to certain degrees, so at this point it's probably just better to buy a whole new one.

That can wait for a little while, though.
