Just a sign that the rules need some adjusting to accommodate for this kind of thing, that way there isn't a distinction as such.

Honestly, I'm not convinced.

Attempting to make the rules cover every possible case invariably leads to loopholes and to people being punished for things they shouldn't be. It's far better to leave the rules as they are, and just have the admins use discresion when someone is clearly being an ass and trying to work around the rules to make trouble.

Plus, whilst I think they're right here, to have them adjust the rules to say that they can control everything we say and do off-site would be very bad. Things like this should only be done when there is a real potential harm, such as people sharing the personal details of other members, not when someone gets angry and flames people off-site (which I'm pretty sure most of us have done at some time or another) or as a result of external trolling. It would be ludicrous for the admins of this site to turn around to members and say "sorry, but you trolled Mike on TFF, so you're banned", and it would be impossible to enforce sensibly in any case.

Extreme situations call for extreme measures, but that doesn't mean that the rules have to cover every such situation, not to mention that it would be impossible for them to do so since situations like this aren't obvious until after they've happened (which is why the government is perenially closing loopholes in the tax system). If someone is deliberately trying to stir up trouble like Neir was, then I don't think they can complain when the admins smack them down for it, even if it's technically not in the rules.
