I remember seeing a lot of hate for this series sometime pre-2020.

Honestly, I don't get why. DF has some of the best examples of good animation I've seen in some of the most unexpected places (for example: Zero Two's suppressed laugh in the first episode), it had a good soundtrack, and its story wasn't bad at all.

Why did people dislike it?

I've kinda fallen off the Japanese learning wagon lately. Its been a bit discouraging because my ability to read katakana is pretty bad and I have gotten pretty rusty at hiragana.

I stopped practicing mainly because I've been having trouble figuring out how to proceed. I had mostly memorized most of the kana (aside from those ones), but I find learning kanji/vocabulary with Anki too frustrating.

But recently I've been trying to get back into it. I've started catching up ...

You ever get the urge to waste time making a fate rpg, only to realize that magic is, well, completely handwaved?

That's me today.

I noticed a weird discrepancy between LNs and their illustrations that seems to crop up a lot.

I first noticed it in (cokesakto's) translation of KnK. Art: Red jacket. Description: Black jacket.
This wasn't consistent, so I chalked it up to translator error.

Then I saw the same thing in Boogiepop. Art: Purple cloak. Description: Black cloak.

I've seen this happen a few other times, too. So is this just translation problems? Artists taking creative liberties? ...

When you feel safe, BOOM!
And as the dust fades, you think:
“Welp, that's the last one.”
