If you had questions about Atlus...

Like questions about how games are chosen, how we make translation decisions, etc. Well, I can't answer most of them without getting in big trouble.

But this Kotaku article is going to be the closest you'll get for a while, even if most answers are pretty general/vague.

I loved the retailers' response to the Catherine presentation.

    "Adult content? In our stores?!"

Because Atlus is not EA or Activision and they take what they can get?

Other than that. That was kinda what I expected honestly, I don't know if it's because I'm a jaded bastard cynical gamer or just that Jason Schreier didn't make it justice.

The one thing I did learn today: I always did wonder why Atlus didn't pick up Dark Souls, now I know. That was bullshit. Demon's Souls was Atlus's baby, you guys deserved to bring in the big one and rake in that cash instead of Namco Bandai sweeping the rug under you guys.

    Kotaku is... yeah.

At one point a few years ago there was a change in editorial policy that basically requires them to have new article up every like, 20 minutes. So that's a big reason why the site's feed is so saturated with relatively inane content.

There's still some actual games journalism that comes out of it, though, usually from the editors that are more invested in Japanese gaming. Like the article I just blogged about. If there is something you found lacking in the article, it's not really Jason's fault. More like it's really all he could get.

Here's a tidbit: Namco Bandai originally turned down Demon's Souls because they thought it wouldn't pan out. So it just sucks that much more, like we set everything up and they stole it.

You could have at least tried to make sure they wouldn't pull such crap behind your back or sue their asses by finding reasonable grounds. I think you guys deserved that project because you did keep the Demon Souls server active because of how much players loved the game. You basically gave back that love in spades and they appreciated you for it.

Sometimes, the industry's got two-faced people running around and doing such things. This probably makes me root for Atlus all the more.

On the other hand, I'm almost certain the Dark Souls PC port would have never happened without Namco Bandai. Brand loyalty aside, I kind of feel like I won as a consumer on that one.

There was no "pulling such crap" or "two faced people" going on here. Sadly the real world does not work like that. Money talks. There are other things at work too but I won't go into them here.

What the article doesn't tell you is that everyone thought Demon's Souls was a risk at the time. Namco Bandai actually had a chance at it first and they turned it down because they thought it wouldn't sell (lol like Verizon and the iPhone). So yeah, there is some indignity that we, who made it a success, got outbid on the sequel, but it's not like there was some illegal shady business happening behind the scenes. Namco Bandai is much bigger than Atlus. It's the same reason why we don't publish, say, Kojima's games (MGS being an IP that's not owned by a publisher). Don't you think we'd like to?

Same deal with Aksys and XSEED, who are even smaller publishers than we are. With some good exceptions, they have to pick up the scraps (e.g. Fate/Extra).
