IRUn's House of Whatever

Looking for...

...random recommendations!

I've decided to get up off my ass and get into more things. Trouble is, I'm not exactly sure where I should start. Normally I'd do things myself and look around, but I've decided to see if the friendly, knowledgeable denizens of Beast's Lair could offer their input on what they think is the shit/bee's knees/your euphemism for what's good here.

The recommendations I'm looking for are:
Music
Western Comic Books/Graphic Novels

@Music:
I've got lots of songs, but not enough of an eclectic (IMO), varied mix. The grand majority is video game/anime/movie music and remixes, but there are a couple actual bands and artists on my playlist such as Eminem, Yoko Kanno, Abingdon Boys School, TM Revolution, Yuki Kaijura, Metallica, Dethklok, Nightwish, Kamelot, John Coltrane, Darude, Two Steps From Hell and Weird Al Yankovic.

Looking for the goodies from genres such as Techno/Electronica sounding music, Metal (subgenre doesn't matter) , and Rap/HipHop. Also jazz, and any song that is considered "essential" for a playlist.

@Western Comics/Graphic Novels:
Ever since I was a kid I loved cartoons and comics. They were my passion. Small wonder I got into anime and manga. But in my recent years I've neglected what goodies the West has to offer in terms of storytelling and art, although I do have my favorites like Watchmen, Fables, Y, Hellboy, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Identity Crisis, Spawn, Kingdom Come (definitive superhero story in the vein of the aforementioned Watchmen) and Sandman.

Genre doesn't matter to me, but so long as the art and story have merit it'll do (I am partial to Vertigo and Dark Horse's titles, though again I've only just begun to dip my feet into that).

TL;DR - BL, what music/comics do you like that you think I'll like too?

  1. Aiden's Avatar
Well shit, you've got everything I was going to recommend.
  2. gothic_dolly's Avatar
Well for Techno stuff, I'm rather fond of Etro Anime [despite there name they have nothing to do with anime].
  3. ItsaRandomUsername's Avatar
I'd be genuinely surprised if anyone besides me is familiar with Fables, to be honest.

    IRUN.

    Shake and Bake.

Read The Army of Darkness Comics and Hellblazer.

    You won't regret it.
  5. KENTA's Avatar
Well, I can only really recommend the two comics I've read. Superman: Red Son, and The Dark Knight Returns.
  6. virzi's Avatar
Definitely read The Dark Knight Returns.

Stay as far away as possible from The Dark Knight Strikes Again, though.
  7. Five_X's Avatar
For music, look up Kaori Kobayashi. She's saxy.
  8. Enhance's Avatar
@music: Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Dope, Pain, KoRn, The Offspring, Mudvayne, Fear Factory, Static X? I also like Jon Oliva's Pain (former Savatage), but it's not really popular. Those are mostly Nu/Power/Industrial.
    Nightwish
--> Rhapsody of Fire, totally. Newer albums, though, I guess.
    Electronica
    The Prodigy?

    Okaaaay....so:
I usually only listen to German hiphop because it's become pretty fucking rad in the last few years (and has been before too, just not as varied), but I think I can give you a few recommendations of English one still. Mostly classics:
-Busta Rhymes. Technique is everything for me in rap, and the guy has a really lulzy sense of humor too. Great artist, probably my favorite English one.
-Wu-Tang Clan. Most of the guys on this list were heavily influenced by them, and for good reason. The clan MADE hip hop what it is, and most of their stuff (especially 36 Chambers) is still some of the best hip-hop you can find.
-Nas. Political and artistic, but never pretentious. Well, almost never.
-NWA. You probably heard a lot of Dre when you listen to Eminem, but here he is in his prime. Another "legendary" group, very influential.
-Cunning Lynguists. I don't really know why I love them this much tbh, but solid beats, solid technique and a little less rapping about how much coke they sell in the streets apparently makes all the difference lol.
Others like Jay-Z and Kanye I probably don't have to mention. While those two are morefamous for dickwaving than anything, Jay is probably still one of the best hiphop artists of all time, and Kanye has fucking mouth-watering beats.
I think you had contact with most of these (I am not really keeping an eye on the US underground, it's just too big for me, I have a hard enough time with Austria and Germany already lol) but they are still pretty awesome.

Well, I also listen to a lot of electronic music, just not Electronica/House, but even there I have a few things for ya...
-Pretty much everyone signed on mau5trap, especially Wolfgang Gartner, who I love so much that I don't mind that the music I am listening to is actually Electro, because fuck Electro.

If you'd like to expand to other electronic subgenres:

My favorite one is DnB. The "trademark" of DnB is a breakbeat, which you can hear pretty well on this Touhou arrange in the intro:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l22d0RFF93Y
Basically this "dun dun BSH" in fast succession. Gives songs a lot of power and energy and makes them some of the most danceable tunes there are (if you are high *cough*).
If you like that stuff, there are some artists you should check out:
Netsky. Netsky does Liquid DNB which is generally more melodical and thus easier for the "beginner" if you want. He's a great artist and all of his songs are either fast-paced roller coaster rides or the most relaxing stuff you'll ever hear.
Camo & Krooked. AUSTRIAN DNB duo from AUSTRIA. No seriously, they are very good and pretty famous in the scene which attracts a lot of haters. Style is simillar to Netsky but their tracks are generally more energetic. (Secret tip: Nothing is older than yesterday. Gets overlooked so often but that track is pure gold)
Noisia. One of the most famous DNB artists. Have quite the "dark" feel to their tracks and mostly less melody, but pretty sexy stuff, check it out.
Tantrum Desire. Less famous but not any less good. Energetic tunes, lots of melody.
