Sound Effect Synthesizer Program

Does anyone know of good software that can be used to digitally create or alter sound effects? I found bfxr, but does anyone know of any other programs that do this- possibly with more freedom over what sounds are created? Also, what kind of program would that be called, a synthesizer?

Alternatively, what kind of process would be able to achieve the same result without sacrificing efficiency, while maintaining effectiveness? Is the industry means of doing this any different? I know that looking for royalty-free sound effects is an option, but there are a load of them- which should I go for?

    I always just use www.freesound.org.

    It has every sound you will ever need.

    I use Audition for editing em though.
