Nutritional Facts in the US just plain suck.

Rate this Entry
Threw in about a dish-sized personal pizza for dinner today. Since I've begun to exercise more in an effort to get into better shape, I decided to look at the nutritional information.

Calories, 280.
Servings... 4.

Because we all know when you're hungry, 1/4th of a dish-sized pizza will make you not feel hungry at all for a good chunk of the day. Nope.

I can understand this for stuff that, generally, should not be eaten all at once - if you eat Oreos by the sleeve, then yes, it's down to idiocy. But even there, things are ridiculous. The nutrition facts are 140 calories, which doesn't sound too bad of course.

The catch? Serving size: THREE COOKIES.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but unless someone is on a very hardcore diet, even girls tend to want more than three Oreos.

What they need to do, if they pull this, is to restrict it to things that you generally shouldn't eat all at once, for example, a bag of sugar, or bottles of maple syrup. (Although...) Anything where a person is likely to eat more than the listed serving size, put it in individually-wrapped containers inside the larger box, or edit the nutritional information to reflect what is actually a general amount that one can assume that an average person would be most likely to consume when they eat.

He did say it was a personal size pizza, I don't know what size is personal where you live but over in my neck of the woods a personal is 8-9 inches, try splitting that between 4 people, it's literally a snack, two bites and gone.

Now, Agree on most points Darples, those values are also standardized to 2000 daily calories, which depending on your day and activities might be too little (If you're a construction worker you need a heavier diet) or even too much (If you're on a desk all day) and there's already boxes with just the packaged serving and nothing more (I've seen them mostly for cookies and soda, but hey) you should try to hit up those.

If you're truly serious about this the best way is learn to cook a few healthy meals, nothing beats a fresh meal and you can add exactly what you need in your diet.

You don't like reading thing, do you Leo.

But ya, its the same with just about everything though, unfortunately. Unhealthy food gets sold cause its delicious and you can't stop eating it.

Like how I just went through a box of pop-tarts without even noticing... Shit.

Is 'dish pizza' some kind of New York slang because I swear there was a ninja edit in there.

If you're serious about dieting you shouldn't be eating crap like that anyway. Pretty much any frozen multi-ingrediant food is going to be terrible for you and should be immediately cut out.

No, it's me pointing out that it's about the size of your average dinner plate.

i.e; not a pizza you'd order from a pizza place.

    You're wrong.

As a snack, I generally don't go for more than two Oreos.

Anyways, I don't get the outrage about nutritional facts in the US when...you're looking at info on some not so healthy food.

Anyways, it could also be that you're used to big portions for your food. I'm always surprised when people say they can eat a whole pizza (or two) and still feel hungry.
