Should I Get Back To Writing TM Fics

Rate this Entry
I don't exactly have much to do with my life these days and I'd definitely like to get back into the swing of writing, so writing TM fanfiction might be a good step in that direction.

Yet I lack enough conviction, motivation, and general willpower to decide this for myself. So I'm asking.

KnK is basically hell for crossovers due to how self-contained it is vis a vis plot/character arcs/etc. There's a strictly limited sense in which Shiki can really function as a character outside the original work.

ANYWAYS. So I will admit that a good reason for liking that particular crossover in my books is Shiki in excessively tight pants and straps (apparently I can't find the best version of the pic, oh well) that have always looked suspiciously like bondage gear, but it's not entirely that shallow. AoT is either a far-right or fascist national myth, and Kara no Kyoukai is basically about the old and new Japan and conflicts between them, so while I haven't thought about it much besides the aforementioned tight pants business I'm sure it's workable in the end.

And yeah, it's fascist not generally far right.
I would have said plain out fascist a while back but I haven't read the manga in a while so idk if it might have ended up on a parallel track.

Well imho the recent ( 20 or so chapters ) subvert hard the apparent glorification of fascism, nationalism, and militarism...

I could go at length but I'm too exhausted to coherently frame my arguments right now. Also having to skim through so many chapters again to find basis for my points would be too exhaustive.

Some other time, I promise. I'll make a dedicated blog post about it.

Yeah its pretty anti-establishment right now, the king was a puppet and a proxy, the military overthrew the regime and put Krista on the throne, all the corrupt ministers are slaving or getting tortured gratiously....

The not-so-subtle notion that the real royal family was brainwashing everyone (except the Ackermanns) with Titan powers for centuries...

    It's not even merely anti-establishment.
The light in which the original King and his philosophy is framed is the complete opposite of glorifying a fascist creation myth. The way their one-sided brainwashing of whole peoples has been criticised tells it all.

Furthermore, both the revelation that the Titans are actually former humans ( and the way this revelation influnces the main characters ), and the light in which the new military government is cast and its actions criticised, point to an anti-militaristic message. Eren's character development showcases this pretty well, from going to an over-excited boy who idolised the military, to becoming disillusioned with the glory of it all during and after the expedition, to questioning his resolve even further after discovering that the other side is much more human than they ever imagined.

All in all I think that the second half of the story should make anyone reading it at least seriously question if the apparent glorification of militarism and nationalism is indeed what it seems at face value. At most I think it can be read as a very convincing and thorough, if still basically simple, criticism of militarism, nationalism, and even government in itself.

You know who else was anti-establishment? Hitler.

Also (and I went back and actually got pictures for this), it's useful to note that Isayama draws like a kind of fascist - that is, I feel that he's very futurist.
