Working on that backlog: Macross Frontier ~Wings of Goodbye~

Rate this Entry
So I decided to work on my anime backlog since I finally have some free time. (Not worrying about school 'till next week, hell yeah!) so I might as well blog about it.

First we start with a movie I should have watched back in October 2011. Lazyness ensued and well...

Anyway, let's ramble about Macross Frontier ~Wings of Goodbye~

This is Skull 4! There are spoilers up ahead!

So, first of all, Wings of Goodbye is a sequel to The False Songstress which is the movie adaptation of the Macross Frontier anime. Those not in the known might not know this, but Macross has been all about understanding each other through songs. Frontier deals with the Vajra, a race of aliens that attacks randomly the Frontier, and destroyed the Galaxy (Space colonies that travel thru space and stuff.) Add a bit valkyries (mechas,) idols, and a love triangle. Mix, rest and enjoy.

So anyway, our main character is Alto Saotome, a dude who can convincingly pass as a lady, since he was a kabuki actor since kid. So a real bishonen doing what bishonen do I guess. He is a student who decided to become a pilot on the S.M.S Squad. He starts as a selfish jerk and goes to becoming a... less selfish jerk. (The heart of gold thing was there, so that doesn't count.) He is also the base of the love triangle.

Next comes Sheryl Nome, the Galactic Fairy, already known idol and my favorite singer of the two. She is outgoing, fun loving and really all that you would expect from an idol from anime. Up to including almost dying because she refused to stop singing 'cause it was her dream (a respectable attitude, i must add.) She is, of course in love with Alto but is also a good friend, rival and teacher to Ranka.

And the final vertex of the triangle is Ranka Lee (Ri/Li/Ree however you want to romanize it, kthx) who is a rookie idol, ex-waitress and nice girl. She is a great foil to Sheryl while still being her own character. Also she sings Iteza - Gogo 9ji - Don't be late so that's a plus for her.

There's a lot of secondary characters, and they get development in the series I am sure. In the movie they are there and they do their thing and that's that. They are three-dimensional characters however. It's clear they have a personality and motivations, we are not shown that said of them completely, that's all.

Anyway, on the animation front, is pretty well animated, as expected of a movie. There are some hiccups here and there, but not that much. There is a lot of CGI tho. The Vajra, the Valkiries, the Macross, all CGI. Not that this is bad or anything, is just a thing.

Vajra designs are also pretty good. They are alien enough while still retaining a "cute" appearance. The brilliant colors help to have a bit of sympathy for them when its necessary to do so.

As for the music, the main songs are "insert" songs sung in-universe and they have plot importance. The background songs do serve their purpose of setting the tone but are not memorable. Most of the songs are of course J-POP so that's something to take note if you are not a fan of that music genre.

A brief musical example.

All in all, it is an enjoyable movie that can be watched if you have an urge to watch mechas, a love triangle that is the focus of the story but done subtle or simply hear some good music while watching something. Of course, watch The False Songstress first.

Or play Super Robot Wars Z2 Hakai-Hen =3

Or ignore it and watch the vastly superior and infinitely not as depressing series instead.

    Well that too.

Although no Michael makes it hard to believe is not as depressing.

Much like the director, I was absolutely baffled by people thinking the end was meant to be doom-laden. What with the credit songs, it seemed pretty obvious they were going to meet again, and Sheryl spoiler hadn't died.

Also, the Quarter goes surfing. It's blatantly there for the 'cool' factor, but still. A Macross-type ship goes surfing through the clouds. Your argument is invalid!

(More seriously, I would say that the series was better, but it's much closer than you're making it out to be).

I mean, in general vibe. The severe upbeat-ness of the series ending tends to uplift a viewer past the depressing 2/3 into the show; the movie, though it has the hopeful bit at the end, is much more grim in overall rhetoric.

I also didn't really like the resolution of the love triangle. I preferred the series leaving it up to a viewer's interpretation.

Of course, the real argument-is-invalid issue is more like this:
