Scavenged from the Wonderland of Rebirth: Artificial Memorial of Perfection

Who is Who? or Who are these jerks?: Hatsuki

Rate this Entry
Roe's entry mentions Hatsuki Towada in a rather unfavorable light. Let us elaborate on her and her situation.

REverse: beginning to end
Hatsuki Towada was your average little girl, innocent and uninvolved in any damning act. Why, had Roe never noticed the Kunikai bloodline, she would've lived an average life and died an average death, unusual events surrounding her lifetime not withstanding.
Of course, that wouldn't have made for an exciting story behind Hatsuki.
One average day in a public park, Roe happens upon a napping Hatsuki. Noticing an odd aura about her, Roe learns her name and keeps her in mind, wondering about what to do with her.
After sending his family to Jigoku, Roe's answer to that quandary is to kidnap Hatsuki, extract her soul, and place his daughter Eri's soul in Hatsuki's body. (Good going, you made an Anti-Mage)
Afterwards, feeling some remorse for such an unlawful deed, Roe, using Purity-based bullcrap, creates a Perfect Manikin of Eri and places Hatsuki's soul in it. Through this deed, the destroyer of a life revives that same life, creating an internal conflict that will plague Hatsuki until later. For now, Roe says:
"You may hate me if you wish; I shall willingly bear your hatred. But should you do that, what else should you live for? You have no family, no friends, for I have torn you from them. To live by yourself? You are still a child, albeit one with opened eyes. You will never survive the harsh world. I, at the very least, will show mercy, allowing you to live in your enemy's den."
With that, Hatsuki grudgingly becomes Roe's Co-Dragon alongside Melissa.

Hatsuki's rebirth had an unusual effect on her. Namely, that she was cursed with the power of All-Seeing Sight, which could reveal the many truths of the Verses. Thankfully for her, she manages to restrict the manifestation of such a terrifying ability through a deck of Tarot cards consisting of the High Arcana, albeit one depicting characters and places that exist through the three Verses.

Throughout much of both the INverse and the REverse, Hatsuki Towada watches from the sidelines, foretelling the fortunes and trials of many important characters. As time goes on, Hatsuki grows jealous of those people as she predicts each and every happy ending, wondering when she can finally break free of Roe's shadow and reclaim her own future. All the while, The Tower and The Fool haunt her in each reading, signalling the coming disaster.

This all comes to a head in the REverse's Afterlife, when, in a moment of weakness, Hatsuki asks Roe (who, at the time, was in the middle of sky diving without a Loftwing) what he would have her do. His answer?
"Do as you wish. You have followed my command for so long; perhaps you have forgotten what it feels to do something of your own volition?"
This answer really doesn't help the poor girl. In one final act of misguided loyalty, Hatsuki goes to confront the girl who had taken her body: Eri Kunikai. Allowing her impassive veneer to fall, Hatsuki invokes All-Seeing Sight, so as to crush her enemy.
But it was not to be, for Sight had foretold her demise. In spite of this, Hatsuki still attacked.
Exhausting her power, Hatsuki lies helpless and defeated as she cries for the first time since her resurrection. Eri comforts her in her last moments, saying that as long you believe, the happy ending is possible. Touched by such positive sentiment, Hatsuki thanks her as she fades away.

???verse:
Time/dimension and life/death shenanigans later (after, of course, Roe is killed, Shinryu has his head blown off, and time travel is involved), Hatsuki Towada is revived and sent to an isolated realm, along with [redacted]. Having been given a new start, she and [redacted] become friends.
After some events that destroy and reform that isolated realm, Hatsuki parts with her friends to wander the three Verses.

SUBverse:
Guilt is such a damning thing.
In her travels, Hatsuki comes upon a boy who had been swiftly and suddenly broken. Sight (which she still had) revealed to her that only death would trace the path for the child's redemption. Reluctantly, Hatsuki throws the misfortunate orphan over a bridge. Into a raging river. In the midst of a worsening rainstorm.
(Good going. Now you created an Anti-Mage)
To assuage her guilt in such a terrible act, Hatsuki seeks out the boy's would-be soul-mate. She hands the lucky girl one of her Tarot cards, the Emperor, and tells the girl to treasure it always.

Randomness:
May occasionally predict the future using Tarot. However, All-Seeing Sight does not always work, especially in regards to mind-reading.
That said, all of her Tarot cards are infused with magic, becoming Spellcards that she can use at a moment's notice.
Each of Hatsuki's Tarot/Spell cards are imbued with fractions of the essence and the powers of the person depicted on each card. For example, the Tower, represented by Melissa Malakai, grants temporary use of Anti-Magic; the Devil, represented by Lucifer Atram Ve-Ofolnir Satan (sometimes referred to as Rowell), grants temporary weapons-mastery; Justice, represented by Sakuri Kunikai, allots mastery of the scorching flames and unmelting ice of one part of Jigoku, to the point where they can be combined into an axe; et cetera.
Hatsuki (this incarnation, at least) takes things in a relaxed manner. She's not completely carefree, but at least she's not running her mind ragged.
Despite herself, Roe is still her master. They've still some issues to iron over, but at least there's no undercurrent of resentment.
