Dogs, and The People who Shouldn't Own Them.

Let's talk about dogs for a second.

I am, and always have been, a major dog person. When I was a little kid I utterly adored any dogs my friends and extended relatives owned, and for the last nine years my Shetland Sheepdog has been my baby. One thing in particular I've always been proud of is how well my family and I take care of him; he's a well trained, lovable doofus and he's never been without anything in his life.

And today, while walking him, I was reminded that for every good, decent family that takes the time to train a dog and provide it with a good home, there's another family who just shouldn't own a dog, period.

My firm belief is that if you cannot take care of a dog, you should not own one. Good intent is awesome and all, but if you don't have the house for a dog, or the space for a dog, or the time and the energy to properly train a dog, you shouldn't have a dog, IMO. For all of how much a dog itself is a powerful animal, with its muscles and its claws and its teeth, it ultimately is a creature at the mercy of how well you tend to it and how well you train it.

So the neighbors down the street from my house have a dog. She's a young thing, a beautiful female German Shepherd, and to my knowledge is only several months old, if not close to a year already. And she spends most, if not all, of her time tied up in their front yard with a long leash. Which, okay, cool, means she has room to move around, even if she seems a bit too thin and is mostly ignored.

Except she has an extremely bad habit of lunging after cars, which no one has ever tried to train her out of, to my knowledge. And her leash? Is long enough for her to go out into the street. My street has a speed limit of 25 mph, but very rarely do people actually obey it.

You can start to see why this pissed me off beyond all reason.

I understand they wanted a dog, and hell in the beginning, when she was a puppy, they were pretty okay with her. But they clearly don't have the time or the energy anymore to look after her, and it drives me nuts to think that all it'll take one day is some idiot who isn't paying attention, going too fast down the road, and she either gets clipped and badly injured, or run over and killed.

Bah. Hopefully, if I survive this animal science shit, I'll be paid to tell people this kind of thing.

And how do you suggest we can train dogs? Is there a time limit when it comes to a dog's age on when do we have to train it?

As far as I'm aware, it's usually a method of 'the younger the better', though I've heard and seen older dogs being successfully trained to drop bad habits. It's really just a matter of having the time and the patience for it.

... ... ... I am trying to avoid just snapping in a homicidal fury. This is pretty fucking close to animal abuse, or at least neglect, and that is a major Berserk Button for me.

Take care of your damn dogs, people.

    You'll hate my countrymen.

What, do they still eat dogs?

Also, make sure other dogs don't try to eat your dog, nor should you let your dog get close to them.

I don't see people do it anymore but the last time they did, I saw a dead dog hanging on a fence, being de-furred with a blowtorch.

And oh, leashing the dog and tying it to a post is the traditional way here. We don't do that.

Honestly, I'd be tempted to call animal control on those people. Not to mention I am not a fan of the Leash/chain method anyway. It's dangerous for the dog. They could hang themselves and it also can drive them literally crazy.

As much of a pain Freya is, she's spoiled (as much as Roadbuster lets me spoil her), and she wants for nothing. And repays my love in the form of biting, but she's still at that stage.

It's a good thing my dog is bright enough not to try and chase cars every time I take her to a walk. Having a not-too-short leash made out of nylon fibers also helps and I keep her in front so that I can see her and guess what she's going to do.

I'd try to let her out on her own, but to tell you the truth I'm scared there'll be an asshole who's going to be too much of a hurry and won't care if a dog is in the way or if she picks up bad company that'll be fatal to her. It would be horrible if I find out that she either became a street pizza or got her body bitten all over by some dog she shouldn't try to pursue.

My family is the animal control whore of the neighborhood, so we rarely see those kinds of things happening around where I live since we always report them to animal control.

    But still, that's horrible. :/

Oh wow, I'm only just now noticing this blog post?

You need to show me these things, Beam!

What the fuck is wrong with them?

... They must have adopted the poor thing out of impulse. Thinking of how the owners could just go on with their life without caring for it while the dog's life is still literally in their hands makes me want to break something.
