If you're ever in my neck of the woods, there's a very famous pizzeria called "La Nova" that does it that way. It's ridiculously good. Here's a picture and a quote from some blog, from someone who apparently lives in Pittsburgh, PA, and made the trip up here: Touted as the “#1 Pizzeria in the US”, La Nova, had a lot to prove to me. What was the crust going to be like? What was the cheese to sauce ratio? Were the toppings loaded under the cheese or falling off the slice? So many questions. And good ones. I had to have the special Buffalo slice at La Nova, the steak pie. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the toppings were piled so high on the slice and UNDER the cheese so nothing fell off or out. They heated the slice for me and as I picked up the greasy piece and folded the kinda sorta Chicago Deep Dish meets kinda sorta NY style slice in half I grinned, already knowing I was about to eat some history. The shaved steak, mushrooms, onions and peppers (not overly cooked but not raw) were hidden under what seemed to be every type of cheese ever made. Ok, I think there were only 4 cheeses involved. But. it. was. cheesy. Then, there was the crust. It almost seemed to taste deep fried. It was so crispy on the outside, flakey almost. And was coated in garlic and oil and topped with sesame seeds. The inside was warm and doughy. It was so bursting with flavor I could have eaten just crust. And I would have scavenged around the shop looking for poor discarded crusts as well. I don’t know if I’d go as far as saying it’s the #1 Pizzeria in the US… but I have a lot more pizza to eat before I can say for sure. I do know that I’ve never had crust like that before. And Pittsburgh needs to step it up in the crust department.
Where is this place, specifically?
La Nova's got two spots in Buffalo. 1) Main Street, which is actually not in Buffalo per se (but is considered part of the greater Buffalo region) - it's actually inbetween two places called Snyder and Williamsville, out by the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport. (So it's actually the closest one to you, if you fly into Buffalo.) 2) West Ferry, which is the one I got mine from and actually IS in Buffalo. This is the original location. That said, if you're all willing to pay the price and live in the Lower 48 States of the US, you can actually buy pizza from them and they will ship it to you, overnight, via FedEx. Obviously, expect to pay a fairly pretty penny for the privilege though - a regular Cheese and Pepperoni Pie will go for $61.95, and the fancier ones top out at about $70, but that includes the shipping cost. http://www.lanova.com/Products/Summary.aspx
