It's time once again for Let's Talk About! Today's Episode: Loli

And I don't mean a bunch of fat, hairy, dudes doing terrible things to small girls. What I would like to discuss is the prevalence of small girl type characters and their general reception in fandoms such as Type-Moon.

Within the casts of many anime and manga we typically get the token little girl character who usually fills the role of little sister, someone to be rescued or taken care of, or in general to just sit around and look cute. More prevalent examples of this include Ruri Hoshino from Martian Successor Nedesco, Fuko Ibuki from Clannad, and Illya and Len within the Nasuverse.

Though not usually sexualized in canon sources, though there are cases of this such as some rather unfortunate art of Rachel Alucard and Platinum the Trinity from Blazblue and Illya as she is presented in her spin-off manga, there is some tendency with individual fandoms to produced fan-works that portray such characters in a sexual light.

That being said, I'd like to know what everyone's opinion on the subject is. As for myself, it should be fairly obvious to most here that I'm a huge fan of Illya and don't really mind some more risque representations of her as long as their done in good taste, with the picture I posted of her in my last blog post being a fair representation of "good taste" is when applied to this subject.

Bonus crap [off topic]:
A certain person I follow on tumblr, who mostly posts cute yuri stuff, has been putting up alot of personal stuff regarding relationships. He apparently has a crush on his younger cousin and by younger I mean she's 11. And people were seriously telling him to confess to her like this was a normal thing. Really WTF internet people of tumblr, I think I lost a bit of my faith in humanity with this one.

    I tend to find myself favoring whichever loli character is in the cast unless she's absolutely and utterly annoying (by my standards). Given I like all three Platinum the Trinity personalities rather equally, that annoying factor is hard to pull off.

    I wouldn't say 'unfortunate' on those cases you mentioned, but then I'm pretty open about being a pervert.

    ... that said, what the hell, tumblr?

    I thoroughly enjoy loli; that doesn't mean I'm gonna at all say this kind of shit is okay in real life. At all.

    If I had enough faith in humanity for this to phase me, I'd probably be seconding your sentiment here.

    Well, I'm not particularly fond of lolicon, but I don't think it's any of my business what sort of things you like, as long as you don't harm anyone with it.

    I pretty much agree with you. I have quite a few favorite characters of the type going allllllll the way back to Sasami and Misao in Tenchi Muyo/Pretty Sammy, who I still love for being a young girl type character who actually adds a lot to the cast and doesn't exist to fill a quotient. I also see Illya in much the same light. My opinion on Len is still kind of up in the air until I play her route.

    And yeah, there is so much wrong with that tumblr thing. I still can't believe anyone would think that is ok. I blame the whole "age is just a number" thing people on that site tend to bring to the table.

    Lately I've run into too many actual pedos who are into loli, so I've lost my tolerance for it somewhat. If it's causing people to think "yeah my pedophilia is normal and I don't need to get help" that's not a good thing.

    Doesn't stop me from liking kid characters though, Illya is boss

    I can understand this, yeah; doesn't change that it's annoying, getting painted with a similar brush to those kind of guys.

    Blame the people, not the thing.

    Can I blame the people who produce the thing to pander to the aforementioned people?

    It's kind of like with furries, where you can never really be sure whether a particular person really does "just like anthro animals", or if they actually want to fuck real animals.

    Basically, now that I've seen the normalization of lolicon/shotacon leading people with mental illness to not seek help, I don't want to perpetuate it. I can live without it.

    Yessss. Sasami was one of the earliest examples, for me, of a loli character who wasn't just window dressing for the series.
    The other one that I liked was Tomoyo from Card Captor Sakura. I always loved what a cute lesbian crush she has on Sakura.

    And I can understand that perspective.

    I just don't like people who have actual problems ruining it for the rest of us.

    On the contrary, I'm quite happy to abandon one niche genre of animu porn for the sake of people with actual problems. It's not like there aren't tons of other genres out there for "the rest of us".

    Why the hell should people be punished just because they share an interest with other people who have real problems? People should be allowed to look at whatever the fuck they like, and the people you're referring to should bloody well stop using it as a fucking excuse and ruining the lives of innocent people be mere association.

    Who's being punished? I'm just talking about why I tend to avoid it now.
