Hard swelling ;^;

Rate this Entry
As some of you guys may already know I had five stitches done on my chin about a week ago (six to seven days) because I fell and suffered a massive laceration. The stitches were removed about a day ago, the wound seems to have overgrown its original boundaries while healing.

It is now significantly larger on the recovering side than on the other side of the chin.

I have a few concerns:

1) the size imbalance
2) the hardness of the recovering area (It feels like a god damn rock)

I was wondering:

1) Is there any way to deliberately impede cell growth safely or otherwise do something to prevent/shrink the massive imbalance?
2) How do I prevent the scar tissue from being hard?
3) How do I encourage it to heal more quickly?
4) Is there any way to 'push' the scar tissue to the centre of the face so it looks more even?

I already keep the the wound with gauze and tegaderm dressing (replacing the gauze/tegaderm dressing every day) and applying Forsuderm ointment on a daily basis while changing dressings.

The swelling should go down in time all on its own.

Judging from the scar and its reduction I would say that it is a normal, if mild, hypertrophic scar, quite common with wounds that require stitches. The redness will go away completely in 4 to 8 weeks but the bump will take about a year or two depending on the size of the wound and how deep it was. Sad to say there is nothing you can do about it until it heals up and goes away on its own.

Best you could do is to continue what you are doing and keep it clean and aerated. Oxygen helps scars heal faster.

Also as much as you can, do not let it get infected. It will cause more scarring and might turn it into a keloid scar which I guarantee you do not want.

Yeah seen keloids before, do not want. You sound like you've seen a number of scars before, do you know how long they take to get to a stage at which they generally won't shrink much after?

Why would a man be worried about getting a little scar? How did you get hurt, anyway?

Running, bad lighting, didn't see chain, tripped, smashed chin into floor

I'm more concerned that it can become something that can be mistaken for a growth/chunk of chin missing than anything else

Depends on the wound really. I have one on my thigh that I got as a kid when I fell down and slash my leg against a broken window. It didn't require stitches but 20years later, it is still there though flesh colored now and only slightly visible when I close my legs and tighten the muscles. You can't even feel it anymore unless you run your finger across instead of along the slash. It got to this state about a time after I hit puberty

On the other a plastic burn I got as a kid as I was remodeling my models with a hot rod. Hot plastic dropped down on my leg and gave by a nice set of drop burns. I was rushed to the burn unit. That was 10 years ago and they are still there. Unlike the other one, while this one turned soft and flesh color, it is still very visible.

Good news though, the cells on the face are one of the best ones around when it come to regenerating. I had broken my nose once when I slip and banged it against a nail on a board I was working on. It did get infected and swelled like a balloon. It took about 2 weeks before the swelling died. After a year later you can't tell I have scar there at all.
