A 500W PSU cost about 30-60 USD (depending on where you shop). Just do the conversion and you'll find the cost.

A $30-60 PSU is a cheapass PSU.

Yeah, it was the default PSU, Im gonna take my graphics card to my friends house tomorrow to see how it fared. I checked my HDD it was working fine so that's something,I guess.

Well, it's not just your videocard you have to worry about... you also need to check your CPU, Mobo, and RAM.

Generally speaking, though, they're supposed to be designed so that if a capacitor does blow (which is what sounds like happened), it's supposed to kill the current itself and hopefully not damage anything else.

In practice... well, you'll just have to get a new PSU and check if the old girl POSTs.

And this time, don't stick with the ones that come with cases. Get it from a known name - Corsair, Cooler Master, OCZ. Or just take this one. 80 PLUS Silver, known brand, and even semi-modular (unfortunately, if you want fully modular, you'd be looking more at the $150+ range.)

Obviously you can't buy from there, given that you live in the land of the Scots, but you can certainly search for it online for some retailer that will. That puppy will last you at least 5 years, I'd say, and if you wanted to add extra videocards or whatever, it'd have room to spare.

Thanks for the advice. I'l look into things. I saw a Corsair 600W for £45. Might just go with that, though first Im gonna see if my warrenty will cover the damages.

well, if your current rig DESTROYED your previous PSU, maybe you might consider getting something just a tad more robust?

for example (though not a great one): I bet Darples is running close to 1000W power supply in his rig. I think i've got 700W.

Yeah but, I really though 500W wouls be enough for my rig,but yeah that is a thought.

Remember that a power supply is less of a "supply" and more of a "converter."

That said, 500W may well have been enough and it was just a cheap piece of shit. Regardless, the better bet is to buy something with "more than you need." And in the case of PSUs, don't buy off-brand shit.
