I love to point this out. If you forget, one of Shinji's first experiences with the eva was having his arm broken and a laser javelin shoved through his eye. He actually felt these things. It was just, "Holy shit my robot's going to explode" no it was "Oh my freaking god there's a laser spear going through my head!"

Not to mention isn't he like 14?
