Extra Life 2012

Dear Friends and Fellow Forumites,

I'm on a mission to save kids through video games, and I need your help.

Aside from my research into games and telemedicine, I've decided to join Extra Life 2012, engaging in an epic 24 hour video game marathon towards the goal of raising money to support my local Children's Miracle Network Hospital. These hospitals treats thousands of children each year, regardless of their family's ability to pay, and deal with scary stuff like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and injuries from accidents to name just a few.

And as an EMT - and as someone who has volunteered in hospitals before - I've seen some rather scary stuff.

It's my sincere hope that you'll find it in your heart to support me with a monthly pledge or one-time gift that will go directly to my hospital (of course, your donation is tax-deductible and ALL PROCEEDS go to help kids - so what have you to lose?)

Last year, Extra Life raised more than 1.2 million dollars to save kids, but in 2012 our goals, just like the needs of the kids we serve, are much, much higher.

I can't do this without your help. Donating online is safe and easy! To make an online donation please visit my participant page below and click "Support This Participant!"

Or if you'd like, join me - and no, you don't have to be part of Team Funcom . Any game. Any platform. Any time. No restrictions.

As for me, I'll be in one of these games during the weekend, using one of these names:

The Secret World - Scryvenyr - Daemon
The Secret World - Ulfhrafn - Daemon
Lord of the Rings Online - Calelborn
Vindictus - Andruviel

Or of course, find me on Steam - if you know who I am - I am perfectly willing to join you for a game of something else. I know Torchlight II has been waiting to be played, among others.

Thank you for caring about children, and know that what you do makes a difference!

This is very admirable dude, excellent work.

I've done stuff and made donations to the Children's Miracle Network in my area as well.

    Good luck, and people, donate.

My father wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for the beginnings of this program.

I'd help, but... I only wish such a campaign would be done in my hometown. Let's see Mr. Thompson fight that!

@Elf Yeah, well, its a worthwhile cause - and those hospitals do a lot a good for children in the community.

@Chaos Indeed, though you know, games have also been used for a lot of other healthcare things. Aside from physical therapy, there's also exposure therapy (for phobias), online learning and such for those with autism/Asperger's (part of something I worked on with the University of Texas), education about disability, for training and diagnostic tools, and even for treating depression.

After all, games have been around since the days of the earliest civilizations - whether in the form of playground games, sports, wargames, social games, or contests of skill or strength, games offered "safe" mechanisms by which conflict could be mediated, behaviors encouraged with rewards/penalties, and interactions with others practiced in situations with clear boundaries and expectation. This ancestral role of games - with their interactive elements - in the development of community and culture may well explain their persistence in the modern day, as well as why video games - what we call "interactive multimedia" have proven so engaging, since they tap into a human predisposition to gaming. And so why not use it for healthcare?
