My brain is made of rock

Rate this Entry
Sitting in Geology lab, trying to figure out how I'm going to ace the exam on Thursday when I don't even have the Sedimentary and Metamorphic rocks memorized.

I've also got to figure out how I'm going to memorize the Protiliths for the metamorphic rocks and the depositional environments for the sedimentary rocks.

AND THEN I NEED TO MEMORIZE THE VARIOUS GEOLOGIC PERIODS OF TIME

*Tosses table.*

THIS FUCKING SUUUUUCKS

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA A

This stupid class doesn't even have anything to do with my major. ;C;

Damnit, WHY ARE THERE SO MANY ROCKS

WHY CAN'T IT BE BLACK ROCK, BROWN ROCK, AND GREEN ROCK

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

We need all these complicated ass names. ;_;

I had a hard enough time memorizing rock-forming minerals and igneous rocks!

ROCKS ARE NOW OFFICIALLY ON THE LIST OF THINGS I DO NOT LIKE

I could seriously try to make a UBW chant about this. I'm so tempted.

GOD, WHY IS THIS SO HARD

    GNEISS

    SCHIST

    ALL THE GODDAMN LIMESTONES

    PHYLITE

AND LIKE TWO DOZEN OTHER ROCKS

HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO TELL THESE ROCKS APART

Well.... why not look them up and try to make notes on some of the more relevant info by summarizing?

Do you know someone that has already taken this course? You could ask them how the hell they figured out how to tell them apart.

    Look up geological mnemonics.

Mmmhmm, I love Geology! My favourite of the sciences offered in school.

It's a piece of schist at times, but Theo, you're a gneiss guy, so I'm sure you'll rock this course!

What school does theo go to and what major?

    That's stone cold.

But in all due seriousness I know this feeling.

Your brain must be rock hard with stress right now.

Gneiss is foliated and has the stripy things
Schist is a bunch of minerals in a matrix
    Limestone is whiiiiiite (and sedimentary)
Phyllite just looks cool with the wavy gray stuff

    Also, minerals > rocks always.

In a lot of places this actually required. or in canada at least lol

@ Neir: Mnemonics don't really do much for me, but memorizing the names of the rocks isn't really the problem. Figuring out what name goes with what rock is the problem. DX

@ Five: I'm currently trying to reach across the internet so I can strangle you with your own large intestine.

@ Leo: I need to fill up my schedule or my insurance policy wouldn't cover me.

    @ Kyokushi: GCC and Anthropology.

    @ IRUN: :P

@ ZidanReign: That wasn't even a good pun!

@ Lianru: I need to differentiate varieties of limestone. And yes, minerals were so much easier to memorize. I could totally sort a box of igneous rocks or rock-forming minerals. But none of these sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are consistent!

@Lian, how do you know this shit, did you google it? (though limestone is pretty generic), the last time I did anything related to geology was way back in elementary school and the only things I remember are igneous, sedimentary, and meta-something

    Metamorphic.

A study tool I use is try to recall where they come from as well as what they look like. Normally, sedimentary rocks are the easier as they always have layers and are more often than not brittle. One way to recall them is that they usually have __stone in their name. Igneous rocks are a bit trickier but their are normally black in color and usually found in areas with volcanic activity and unlike sedimentary rocks, they are whole or freckled depending on mineral content and formation as well as rate of cooling. They are separated by either silicon content (felsic, intermediate, mafic, ultramafic in decreasing order) and occurrence whether intrusive or extrusive and grain whether they are course, medium (only 1 igneous medium grain and that is Diabase I think) or fine which is the determined by their occurrence as well, (extrusive is fine, intrusive is course or did I get that mixed up) Their are only nine or eight of these I think used so its pretty easy to memorize.

Metamorphic is the rest and the really odd ones XD

I had to memorize these as I am an engineer and knowing the type of soil as well as rock is essential to construction :3
