Visual Novel Logic

So I'm the route I'm writing for that visual novel I mentioned awhile ago is well underway. But I'm having some issues with the backstory. Without going to deep into the plot, the heroine of the route I'm writing is a robot girl who looks to be about 11 -and yes its a romantic route- but I'm questioning why the main character, who is 19, would build a robot who looks like a little girl.

What do you guys think?

I think it can only come off as creepy/perverted/angsty

Hmm. Kind of hard since no matter what some people will just point and say BUT IT'S LOLIIIIIIIIIIII~~~~

Off the top of my head, I'd say he probably intended for her to be some sort of companion. A big sister for younger kids, or a little sister for older kids. He intended for her to be some kind of companion, but perhaps underestimated how curious she would be about some things?

Well, she is a battle android and kind of follows the "Robot learning to feel" plot line.

Yeah, building a robot who looks like a little kid who you then sleep with is a bit weird.

Only reason I can think of right now is because it reminds him of someone close to him or someone he knew years ago (alive or not is optional). That, or what Darples said.

I will note you never sleep with her, it's an all ages game, and she gets an adult body at some point.

Just say it's because he's a pervert; you can't escape it so you might as well embrace it. Put all the other perverts to shame.

I'd still go for the 'person he knew' route; maybe an old crush or a relative (sister, cousin).

I imagine I 'll just ask the creator why he built her in the first place. Otherwise it sounds like something out of chobits.

Sorry for the lack of ideas; I'm a bit burnt out at the moment. =_=

No problem. Her whole design and story is very akin to other stories like chobits and key the metal idol in the first place.

I have an idea, maybe a rubbish one, but listen: It could be because he knew that he was perverted, but not willing to sleep with his own creation, so he made it look like a little girl, because it is, for his taste, unappealing.

Yeah, you could very well make it a player choice that affects the story.

It's all ages, so that steps around the "ick factor" of a loli, and it means the love is kind of more of a platonic love.

I could see her being curious about other body types (she can't grow, after all, so she doesn't know how to experience growth unlike a real person), but this would require that the creator is able to actually build them. If that's not a problem, perhaps have her request to try different forms, use choices to keep track of what one the player likes best, and then have her decide to be the player's liked form.

For example, she starts as a loli, so she does loli-like things, acting all cute and moe and administering crushing amounts of HNNNNNNNNNNNNNG. Then she sees older couples (teenagers) behave differently. She wants to try that, but the creator says people her age don't do that... so she wants to become older. So then she goes through a teenage phase (i.e; creator builds it), and explores that side of herself, finding out questions on love and "strange feelings" and maybe even flirting with her creator a bit.

Then, later, she sees a more mature couple with a kid (or two) of their own. She obviously points out the older woman has even more... attributes (in the sense that obviously adult women have bigger boobs than teens, etc.) and so wants to try that, too. If this were a pervy VN, the question of sex would come up, but we can obviously skirt that here, and just have the creator explain that unfortunately it's impossible for her to have a baby like a real person. She would likely understand with some recalcitrance though. So then she goes through her adult phase, and since she can't have kids of her own, she ends up with surrogates - probably in the form of pets, like dogs, cats, or birds, trying to care for them as if they were her children.

Throughout these, the player's score on choices is kept internally; the highest scoring form (i.e; the one the player reacts the most positively to) is the one she decides to be after these rounds of experimentation, and that affects the ending. This way, she could be the charming little sister, or someone closer to the creator's age (i.e; more best friend and/or girlfriend material), or even someone a little bit older if the player portrays the creator as someone who's a bit lonely and really wants someone to nurture him, thus making her into more of a mom figure.

In this case, loli was first simply because it was the easiest to build, due to flat chest and less materials needed, compared to a full-height body.

Here's what the creator had for me. She is a completely emotionless android built by her creator as a companion, guard, and work unit. Over the course of the route she learns to better express herself and its her creator working with her over the course of the story that triggers the romantic portion of things. The loli shape is because its easier to pass her off has his little sister, i guess.

Only an idiot would make a companion robot with no emotions, and only a bigger idiot would design a battle robot that's shaped like a little girl. I say you go rogue and make the battle-droid a tachikoma-style spider tank, and separate the companion and assistant functions into a wise-cracking robot monkey.

Hm, okay. Well obviously a loli isn't the most optimal shape for work or guard, so I'd presume at least one "change" to a more adult form, either teenage or full-on adult, would be needed, especially if she begins to develop romantic feelings for him. While it's cute to have a loli crushing on him, he'd no doubt have to explain that they can't act like a couple unless she's older... so I'd see her demanding to be made a bit older. (Not to mention obviously having a taller body means she'd be physically stronger and so on, albeit somewhat heavier.)

Unless you want to pull off the "super loli" aspect, but I'd presume in an all-ages VN, if the intent is for romantic, you may well want to make her more of a teenager eventually (naturally, she's magically at least 18!) which means she gets a re-fit/new body. If this were a R18 title, then obviously, her being a loli would matter a fair bit less...

Yeah, I was thinking something like this is the best option.

Heh, I think Mcjon has it right.

Honestly "emotionless loli battle robot" sounds really derivative, I'd say scrap it altogether and come up with a better character concept. (Harsh, I know, but VNs need more originality!)

I'm stuck on this one. I'm just the writer. The concept and everything was set in stone before I came aboard. But, I will totally admit that at times writing this character feels a bit like I'm writing fanfiction of someone like Rei Ayanami or Yuki Nagato.

...Though both of those have tons of hentai...

I guess the emotionless girl is popular because she can be anything? Like some kind of weird, ersatz, personified Reading Rainbow?

(...You're probably not going to get that joke, I know. Apologies in advance. Neither will the younger viewers of our forum, so here's a video to explain it!)
