So Many Games, So Little Time

Rate this Entry
My first blog post! Such a momentous occasion! And I am using it to ask advice.

Wow I'm lame. Oh well!

I am at an impasse. I've been a gamer for most of my life, but as of these days I do not have much time for gaming. Sometimes not even inclination. I still have a backlog of games from last Christmas that people gave me. But there are titles and series that catch my eye, and if I wait to buy them they'll probably dwindle out of existence entirely.

I've heard some interesting things about Ar Tonelico, for instance. Same for Legacy of Kain. I'm also futzing around in Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, will eventually move on to the PSP sequel, and probably the rest of the series. I've also been intrigued by Red Dead Redemption.

Has anyone played those games, and can they offer some opinions? Because I'm not prepared to shell out money on a maybe, and I don't want to buy games that will collect dust on my shelf. I have enough as is, and if I want to finish them in a year I'd probably have to give up going online entirely.

Which, for obvious reasons, can't happen.

So....thoughts?

Also, spoilers are not cool and uncool people are not cool, and who wants to be uncool? So be cool.

EDIT: Any suggestions of good games are also welcome, or good online sites to buy from.

Ar Tonelico is… hmmm… yeah interesting. You will probably like it if you like its music. Here'll be an example of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM3D43N7wec It also has a lot of world building (a language, mythology of the world, how the world was created, how the technology works, etc). Arutone 1 has probably the weakest and most boring gameplay since is turn based. Arutone 2 has one of the best gameplays ever. Arutone 3 is sort of average in that regard. The graphics are not that great but they work. And fanservice. Like flooded of fanservice. Is so overused that it becomes hilariously over the top. The stories in the games are good too, but its the characters that shine on them. Oh yeah its a trilogy, 1 and 2 are for PS2, 3 is for the PS3. Something to consider.

As for the others, sorry can't help you there, haven't played them (the disgaea games are a chore for me since I dislike grinding, the Legacy of Kain series I arrived way too late to play them and Red Dead Redemption is a sandbox style of game and I can't really stand the genre.)

Ooh, that is promising. I love music and world building, especially how the technology tics. Whether I get sucked in can be hit or miss, but it is a very appealing quality when presented well.

Sadly, 3 sounds like it would piss me off. 1 and 2 sound okay though.

And....honestly, was going through Duke's Palace (IIRC) and ending up stopping. I didn't find it as compelling as Demon's Souls. I'll probably go back someday though.

I despise blatant and unceasing fanservice. Maybe it's funny for you, maybe it'd be funny with me, but my sense of humor has weird boundaries. People acting stupid, lying when it's stupid, and blatant fanservice for the sake of fanservice really, really irritate me. Especially if anything more than small doses.

There are exceptions to this, but by and large it holds true for me.

One out of twenty something from only the first game. All the other songs have different rhythms and styles. There are also some CDs that have tracks that don't appear in the game.

I'll learn to communicate properly one day. I swear.

All the series is like that. Not just 3 (though 3 is the most in your face with it. Like stripping in combat is a gameplay mechanic, I kid you not.) I say its hilarious because there is no way that was written to be taken seriously (to be arousing I mean.). However, is justified, sort of, in-universe and the only perverted protagonist is the one from the third game (and even then he is sort of mild with it. Also, since he is voiced in Japanese by the same guy who voiced Shirou I just give him a pass because it was hilarious hearing Shirou say all that =V). Of course, if you can't pass the fanservice, then yeah. (Side note: Ar Tonelico helped me learn how ti ignore fanservice.

Are all the songs roughly of the same quality?

    Hmm....

Damn. I do dislike blatant fanservice but the pros you've listed are still really damn tempting. Still, if there is no annoying perverted protagonists and it's....I'm not sure how to put this.

If it's more like it's part of the scenery than in your face, I think I might be fine with it. If that makes sense to you. As long as it's just there and the game isn't stopping to force me to acknowledge and pay attention to it, I could probably get used to it.

No. Not because there are bad songs, but because it has a lot of different styles. Compare, say Exec_Sphilia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oGdjaLmLqw to Exec_Despedia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEW3VQiRdQM Different styles, some you will like, some you will not. 3 has a polka of all things. It all comes down to personal taste.

Well the game doesn't force you to (except maybe three because like I say stripping in combat.) The game just introduces it as a gameplay mechanic and then just lets you ignore it. For example, the second one has a system where some of your female party members can take a bath, you can create items for the bathing and they have conversation and stuff. Dressed in only towels of course. You can ignore it if you like since the game is not hard. Like I say, the most sexualized one 3 (and its gender equal in that regard sop =V).

Well, except the cosmopheres, maybe. But that's basically getting into the psyche of someone and even then only in one or two levels of it. (And it sort of makes sense because of what the level represents but eeeh.)

I'll check them out anyways. I like music. It's pretty much the only art form I appreciate in almost all its forms.

Hmm.....well, I might be able to deal with that. It depends on a lot of things, but it could be good. Especially with a good script. Although the games being easy is a bit disappointing.

Bah. If only the games were cheaper and easier to find.

I'd also recommend Persona 4. It's definitely one of the greatest games on the PS2 (And now it's even better version on the Vita), and Tales of the Abyss on the PS2/3DS

I can tell you that Disgaea is pure crack. It's a very addictive SRPG, one with a fun sense of humor and like I said, it's really fun. I suggest the PSP version. Going with the vanilla PS1 version you won't miss too much gameplay wise. You miss out on the bonus boss levels and gaining some of the cameo characters (Like the D2 leads, Book Zetta, and Laharl's father). The PSP version also has a Etna Story, a alternate storyline where she's the main character (you can use a code to get to it from the getgo)

D2 PSP and PS2 are much more different though. PSP version far outshines it and I recommend it. The gameplay is better in PSP, you get much more bonus content, bonus bosses including 3 Disgaea 3 characters and then there's some DLC.
You also get Disgaea 3's magichange as well (though, you need to be careful, if it's not done right it weakens people) and a bonus storyline too. I do suggest trying to figure out how to unlock magichange before you start the main storyline, but eh, if you can't I suppose you'll have to deal, it ain't too bad.

And I feel your situation. I'm in the same one. I have TONS of games I still need to play. As a matter of fact, I need to build a list. If you run out of suggestions for playing, make the list and throw it up for us to vote on which you play first.

Eh, I've heard good things about Persona, but I just haven't had my interested stirred enough to play the entire series. I just don't have the continuous time commitment available to keep big storylines in track and regularly play them.

Disgaea is crack, but it has serious moments and I'm pleased with purchasing 1 and 2 on PSP. I'll play the second sometime soon.

    3, I'll buy when I'm done 2.

Not sure why you guys would want to know what games I play, but I suppose that if I can't decide for myself, maybe I'll toss a list up here.

Emulate them Get your PS2 modded and burn the ISOs Amazon has them at $29.99 each one. A bit pricy but they are hard to find.

Also all the Persona games are self-contained. You can play 4 then 1 then 3 then 2. You would only spoil yourself that the world doesn't end at the end =V

Yup, looking at some offers now. Considering. I mean, it's pricy and I don't know when I'll play it, so if it's a bad copy I can hardly return it.

Some new copies floating around too from good sellers, but I've never bought from them even if they do have good ratings.

As for Persona.....hmm. Okay, maybe I will look into 4. Even if the Social Link system has never appealed to me.

ATIII is actually $25.00 on play-asia so if you want to save yourself $5 there is that. =V

Also if you end up playing them, you have to post reactions because I don't wanna be the only one that played them

    Play-asia trustworthy?

Also, that's ATIII. I haven't even played the first game, and that's the one most in danger of being lost to me.

Still, I suppose I could post reactions. If I remember.

Play-asia is the best (all my imports (both from US and Asia) are from them.)

And hey I'm just listing prices.

I would bug you to do it (or we could exchange VMs or PMs about it. =V)

If it's listed in Japanese, no go. I'll buy local and suck up a few extra bucks, to make sure I get a good copy.

Well like I said, long list of games, don't know when I'll be free for them.
  18. Laith's Avatar
Nah its the US version. It's indicated quite clearly when it says US as place of origin.

And its okay, I have a backlog of games too. And even though I'm free its three JRPGs sop… (my love for alchemy, Europe at the 1700s when the industrial revolution was starting and yuri subtext is my bane.)
