So Many Games, So Little Time

Rate this Entry
My first blog post! Such a momentous occasion! And I am using it to ask advice.

Wow I'm lame. Oh well!

I am at an impasse. I've been a gamer for most of my life, but as of these days I do not have much time for gaming. Sometimes not even inclination. I still have a backlog of games from last Christmas that people gave me. But there are titles and series that catch my eye, and if I wait to buy them they'll probably dwindle out of existence entirely.

I've heard some interesting things about Ar Tonelico, for instance. Same for Legacy of Kain. I'm also futzing around in Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, will eventually move on to the PSP sequel, and probably the rest of the series. I've also been intrigued by Red Dead Redemption.

Has anyone played those games, and can they offer some opinions? Because I'm not prepared to shell out money on a maybe, and I don't want to buy games that will collect dust on my shelf. I have enough as is, and if I want to finish them in a year I'd probably have to give up going online entirely.

Which, for obvious reasons, can't happen.

So....thoughts?

Also, spoilers are not cool and uncool people are not cool, and who wants to be uncool? So be cool.

EDIT: Any suggestions of good games are also welcome, or good online sites to buy from.

Sheesh, at this rate if I picked up everyone's suggestions I'd have games for the next 2-3 years. At my current playing rate.

Still, okay, Shadow Hearts is on the list.

Honestly, I'm a bit nostalgic for games that are about good stories. Where I don't have to suspend disbelief to buy into the plot. I want to be entranced, enthralled by a new world that doesn't make me nitpick. So, I'll take that as an endorsement of Legacy of Kain.

Annnnnnd add Deus Ex to the list, I suppose.

And also, don't forget DARK SOULS. One of the hardest, rage inducing, addicting, and beloved games of 2011/2012. It is amazingly great. It's brutal, but after a thousand fails, each step forward is feels like a celebration.
Also, it's fans are like Touhou fans. We're completely insane.

It's a bit under 20 for the main game at places like gamestop, and 10 bucks for the expansion DLC. Also, a PC version (the Expansion is a part of that already)

It is very addictive though, so get a few of those RPGs under your belt.

Also, I can say that Soul Nomad is a really cool game and another I'd recommend. Deus Ex 1,2, and Human Revolution as well. 1 i know is on PS2 as well, but the PC version is moddable and it's old, so it's accessible. Human Revolution is a prequel, so no need to worry about spoilers.

I love you for throwing Shadow Hearts in here. Absolutely, 100% agreed.

Valkyrie Profile is also really good. Second one is complex as hell though.

For Hymn's benefit, here's an example of the Shadow Hearts battle system (as seen in SH2).

Skip to 3:04 if the movie doesn't skip there for you.

Did I mention Yoshitaka Hirota should be getting more composer work? Because man, the soundtracks to all three games are wonderful (but he did much less work on the third game compared to the first two). Should I ever be in a position to call such a shot, I am going to try to hire this man.

It seems you like games I do with great stories well then I'll list the games I think you would like and just add why I recommended the other games. Wall of text ahoy.

Planescape torment is the game that is tied with xenogears in my mind for best storyline. It has low graphics and its fighting gamplay isn't the best.

But it has a estimated 800,000-850,000 words so about the word count of the first six harry potter books combined. The story starts with the main waking up in a morgue after finding himself dead and with amnesia. Then suddenly a floating skull shows up and says he is his best friend and that he is immortal and unable to die. So he goes off in a city that is connected to all alternate dimensions in existence to figure out who he is.

Deus Ex can't be recommended enough as well with many options for each puzzle and control over how the character reacts.

ICO and shadow of the colossus took minimalism storytelling to a art form they give you the pieces you make your own story based on the events.

Valkyrie Profile has a decent storyline with a lot of twists but its game play can be annoying. On the other hand it has a lot of awesome twists and turns in the plot that is hard to find out at all.

Baroque has a decent storyline but it is sparse and you have to read into it. Its also the most absurdly hard game ever. Your always surrounded by foes they can take 1/10th your life bar in one hit and your outnumbered about 15 to 1 on average and your health is always dropping due to..other effects and if you die your level is reset to 1 and all your equipment is gone unless your lucky enough to have stashed it away. Oh and you can only stash 5 items away.

Fallout 1-2's main draw is being non-linear as can be in a game and having plenty of options for each quest. You can fight anyone and do almost anything and go almost anywhere.

Shadow hearts 1-2 is sort of darkish pulp with good humor and a decent battle system.

Anyone mention Star Ocean: TTEOT Director's Cut? Or even Wild Arms?

Too anyone, I would recommend Tensei: Nocturne. DemiFiend man.

Dark Souls: Leo suggested it and I already have it, never actually finished it. Didn't compel me as much as Demon's Souls. Well, not enough to keep finishing the game and exploring. Time constraints played a factor, and the first Lord Soul I went for was Seath's. His level is a bitch.

I shall look at that video sometime later.

Planescape Torment is also on my radar, even if I'm not familiar with the setting.

Played Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, they were superb.

As for Star Ocean: Till The End of Time, what a disappointment. Seriously, one big twist, not even executed all that well IMO. It had some good stuff, but I wasn't very impressed.

Wild Arms I've heard of a bit. Not much though.

And if you're referencing what I think you're referencing Zidan, I pass because I don't have that kind of time.
