I need some History help

Rate this Entry
My partner and I have an art project due in 2 weeks. It has just started.

It requires us to make a poster showing the type of style back then. Style as in what type of clothes did they wear, what buildings were there and the art style back then. My teacher tells us to first search for sources that shows us this. For example, he told look at a movie that was set ion that time period and showed what they wore and their mannerisms.

My partner and I are focusing around 1066 England, with the Norman Conquest of England.

What I wanted to ask is what are the best sources for what they wore, what type of mannerisms they did, the building style and all of that. We know we can use the library for more information and that's what we plan to do, but I would like to know where exactly I and my partner should look for pictures or references of the type of artistic style they had back then. My teacher suggested the Bayeux tapestry and to watch the movie Robin and Marian, so we're going to look at that, but what other sources could we use? Besides Wikipedia and the library and Google.

lol is she seriously telling you to use a movie as an academic source

Historical documents of the time. See if there're collections of letters or such floating around that may have some information. Ask your librarian if you get an electronic journal database. Google Books and Scholar.

391 in the Dewey Decimal system covers costumes of different regions and eras - that should help your library search (assuming that they use Dewey to catalogue materials, of course). Aside from that, start your title search with "The Writer's Guide to" - it's a fairly comprehensive series, and medieval England is one of the periods that they cover. Fashion, architecture, monetary systems - it varies from book to book, but you usually get at least a starting point for any in-depth research, if not a full explanation of everything about the era.

    Hope that helps.

Yeah, this. (Though why the 'she' assumption?)

Though, in fairness, the Bayeux Tapestry is a reasonable place to start for noblemen and soldiers. Its buildings could be a lot clearer, though. In terms of construction, religious and governmental buildings tend to have plenty of attention paid to them: have a look through the two sections on this list which deal with the Middle Ages, for example.

    Thanks everyone!

This will help out a lot when I go to the library this Friday. And thanks Seika for the church building. I think I'll use the Canterbury Church for the building design since I need one that's actually in Britain.

84% of US primary/secondary teachers are female, you sort of expect it as an American.

Hmm. Assumptions. I tut at you, Leo. I tut at you.

(Quite apart from anything else, Sylent did call the teacher a 'he' in the blog post, which you might have picked up on).

Assumptions that are correct mind you, Seika.

I haven't seen the fabled male teacher until I entered college.

    Coaches don't count.

But they're not correct, as shown by the fact that Sylent's teacher in this case was male. His statistic is probably fine, but what he did with it wasn't.
