IRUn's House of Whatever

Heads full of Metal (not of the musical variety, sorry to disappoint)

I was hanging out with friends today, and one of the myriad of topics we talked about this time was cartoons. We talked about what we used to watch back in the day, got to hear about some equally nostalgic and obscure stuff courtesy of other people's childhoods and tastes, what we watched genrewise (us being 'mericans who watched 'merican TV all mainstream animation then and now is either comedy or action, so take a guess), and cartoons nowadays like Adult Swim and the like.

Not surprisingly, the flow of the subject shifted to anime, the discussion of which is a mixed bag in my usual group because some of them watch it, some not as much, and then there are the outliers who represent the extremes of either side who either watch none of them Chinese Girl Cartoons or those who WATCH ALL OF IT. Conversation went along the previously established tracks of train of thought and then went to industry trends, which naturally went to the topic of what is commonly known as "moeshit."

One of them was for its continued propagation because they felt that it hadn't run its course yet, and that meaningful stories can still be derived from something even if that something is at its core just an excuse to watch BESM'd girls do cutesy stuff for a half-hour. One insisted that it should just die already. And crash and burn like a plane whose engines had spontaneously disappeared in an act of God. Or at least reduced to a minimum if concessions had to be made because anime studios cannot possibly seem to part with anything that can cause a case of the warm fuzzies or hnnnng.

The other didn't give a shit because he's exclusively a /tg/ fag.

Either way, if moeshit is going to stick with us for some time in some shape or form until the trend truly does wear down, then the industry should go and exploit the next, untapped wellspring...

For needless drama, I'mma gonna go and put my revelation within a spoiler tag. Just to make it seem like it's a big deal when it really isn't.

...braces!

I can only speak for myself, but nothing lights my fire quite like a cute girl with a mouthful of corrective orthodontics.

While I personally think that everyone looks better without them and their teeth are all pretty and aligned, there's still something undeniably charming about them.

Seriously Japan. Get on that. Its ripe for the picking.

So, what say you, folks? What sort of cartoons did you used to watch and what kind of reasons do you remember having for sticking around? Care to namedrop any? And what are on your thoughts on the proverbial topic of "moeshit?" Are you into the K-ON!s and IdolM@sters, the multitude of series past and present that forgo any service because who needs that in their plots, or do you like 'em together as part of your own personal PB&J of Japanese animation?

Fan service doesn't actually do much for me. I could live with or without it.

I still watch cartoons, I'm just more selective now.

Two of the cartoons I watched as a kid only make my love of anime seem all the more appropriate: ExoSquad, which was jumping on the Robotech bandwagon, and King Arthur and the Knights of Justice, which should be funny for obvious reasons.

As for moeblob shows, well, I don't particularly have an issue against any sort of trend in anime. I mean, it's just like anything else in anime. Or entertainment in general. It'll come and go at its leisure and something else will rise to take its place. Might as well find the ones that you enjoy and get your money's worth while they're here, since in ten years it'll probably be impossible to find for a while. And I like my SoL stuff. It provides a nice balance for when I'm watching something overly serious like Psycho-Pass or something depressing as shit like Kotoura-san (I don't care what anybody says, even with the comedy in that I still feel like an ashamed human being that should die with the rest of his species when I watch that show).

The main cartoons that I remember watchin?
Spider-Man: The New Animated Series and Unlimited and Transformers Beast Wars, Beast Machines, and Robots in Disguise.
Spider-Man because I'm a webface-fan. Transformers because I'm also a fan, and Dinobot is my hero. RiD Megatron/Galvatron is awesome, though Megatron II (BW) is such a HAM.

I really don't have a problem with "moeblob" stuff, I just tend to not watch it much. K-ON I watched and liked, but I'm not a rabid "ZOMG BEST ANIMU 4 EV3R YUS" fan of it. IdolM@sters I haven't watched; I just like Takane and her songs.
I blame Santo for any attachment I have to Acchi-Kocchi. XP

My all time favorite anime (which I now own all discs of~) is FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Favorite manga? FullMetal Alchemist (yes rly), Black Cat, and PSYREN.

Name virtually any cartoon that aired between 1989 and 2000 or so, and I probably watched it.

Same with me, The only thing I didn't get to watch until I was older was Macross. There's a lot of old stuff that's gone from TV these years, I remember being a kid and watching Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, etc.

As far as the "Moe" thing goes, I think it can die a painful and fiery death.

Robotech, DBZ, Ronin Warriors, Pokemon, Digimon, Gundam, Gundam Wing, G-Gundam, Zoltron, Rurouni Kenshin, Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo ...

And that's just the stuff I saw on Cartoon Network and Fox Kids. The anime stuff.

Then for non-anime... Spider-man, X-men, Silver Surfer (for the short time they made that a cartoon), Batman the Animated Series, Loony Toons, Ed Edd n' Eddy, CatDog, Rugrats, Transformers (original and Beast Wars) ... fuck, at this rate I'm gonna name everything in the 90s.

Yeah so everything in the nineties basically.

I am neutral on the 'moe'. Some of it is good, some of it is just moe and thus often not that great.
