Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy

I went to the Distant Worlds concert yesterday. Really great time with friends. There were several people (including my friends dressed as Black Mages) in cosplay surprisingly. There was a group that went as a pretty good Lightning, Snow, Vanille (I think. never did play 13) as well as a Cloud. Shame there was no Cid/Barrett but that's the breaks.

For the repertoire that evening, it was kinda disappointing. I went to the last Distant Worlds and the songs were excellent. This time around, they went with more FF13 stuff (which isn't bad but it doesn't have the great thematics of the previous FF songs) and FF12 (same issues).

Highlights of the evening would have to be FF6 Terra's theme, FF9 You're not alone, FF10 To Zanarkand and... One winged Angel encore (if you don't know where this one's from you obviously don't know much about Final Fantasy)

They did a cute Chocobo theme medly. The video on screen started with a small baby Chocobo (the one from ff-11...) hatching from an egg. In that instant, you could hear all the "Dawww"s coming from all the females and probably males in the audience drowning out the orchestra. Man, if Chocobos were real they'd be bloody chick magnets.

Interesting thing, after the encore the audience had a derp moment where they kept clapping for almost a minute such that Arnie Roth (the conductor) had to come back on the stage twice and bow to let them know it was finished. The lights turning on evenually stopped it. My friend mentioned that, unlike rock bands, orchestras can't just impromptu play a song for an encore since most of the time they're local and don't make the song themselves.

Cool, where did you see it?

I've been twice to the Royal Albert Hall to see it in London and it's definitely worth going to! I kinda preferred the playlist the first time around as well.

Vancouver at the Orpheum Theater. I guess since they do have to change the songs up every year so it's not like they can just play the most popular ones all the time.
