Seasons in the Sun – Why did he die?

Rate this Entry
A couple of days ago one old song started to play in my head, so of course I needed to find it from YouTube: Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the sun". I listened to both English and Finnish version (which was the "original" for me, I heard it a lot when I was a kid) while I was playing solitaire (when I should have been cleaning etc, but that's another story...).

Because I listened it many times, I became really aware of the lyrics, and some googling was needed. Terry Jacks' version isn't actually the original, it is originally a Belgian song, and it was translated into English once before Terry's version, first version was a bit more faithful to the original. But all versions tell about a dying man saying goodbyes. But I didn't find answer to my original question: Why the hell was the man dying?!

When I was looking for info of lyrics, I also found out that Westlife had made a version of it. I won't link it, it's bad (Teen idols bleating like sheep while backgound sounds like a Christmas schlager). Find it at your own risk.

Like the seasons themselves, his life is ephemeral at best. Asking why he was dying is like asking why summer ends; it's just the way things are.

It just seems like a weird point to fixate on, considering the themes of the song?

Japanese aesthetics have a fixation for this, called "mono no aware". It can't be helped.

I thought that was "shikata ga nai".

"Shikata ga nai" is "It can't be helped". "Mono no aware" is "awareness of the impermanence of things".

I just remarked "It can't be helped" because I am basically saying that, while the themes of the song is the impermanence of things, it can't be helped that some people are fixated on how things tend to be impermanent, yanno?

Well, the other points were clear to me. This was the only open question I was curious about.

    Yes, I know, I'm weird.
