- but I'm totally going to gloat. Best wife ever, guys~! Elf ended a near 20 year search today by working with our friend that owns a gameshop to give me this for my birthday:
Way back in 94, I picked up an issue of EGM2 and saw this game featured in it. I was blown away by the story it was supposed to be telling and loved the graphics it displayed. I always had a big love for adventure games like Sam and Max and Day of the Tentacle, and this seemed like a badass extension of something like that. I didn't own a Sega CD, but my friend did. We rented it... and holy shit.
Snatcher is part Blade Runner, part Terminator, all fucking awesome. I didn't even really know who Hideo Kojima was back then, but I knew the robot in the game was called Metal Gear and looked like a much scaled down version of the nemesis in the NES (all we had over here...) game that I had enjoyed. The voice acting was actually good. Back then... that was a damn near impossibility. This was the time of Night Trap and the like...
However, finding this game was impossible. Hell, I wanted to buy it even though I didn't have the system. Nobody ever had it, and then it became one of those super rare games that command a massive price. Take a look on eBay right now... I had almost resigned myself to having to drop as much for this game as one of my cabs.
But Elf conspired with the owner of Arcade Legacy in Cinci. The story goes that a guy traded the game in, but insisted that it find a good home. The owner immediately contacted Elf and they came to a deal for it really quick. It might sound a bit cheesy, but I am freaking stunned. This is easily the greatest birthday present I have ever received. Thanks again, babe!!
Here's a link to an Imgur album so if you wanna see some more pictures, including some screenshots of it running on my Hipster Genesis
