A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Convention...

Rating: 6 votes, 5.00 average.
Long, long ago, I went to Anime Revolution 2012 in Vancouver and saw the events, bought the swag, and photographed the cosplayers.

Just a few months or so back, I happened to actually meet up with one of those cosplayers. In fact, we actually work together and live in the same town, which really is kind of surprising. You might vaguely remember her from my AR blog here, in which I mistook her for the actually super famous cosplayer/model Jessica Nigri.

The girl in question is Rion Risque.

Anyhow, she's a good friend of mine now, and I think it's decent to help her get famous. She hopes to make a profession out of cosplaying, and she does a pretty damn good job of it - her costumes are hand-made, and she honestly enjoys doing cosplay. She does good work, and ought to be recognized for it! As a person she enjoys long walks to Subway, laments her lack of a PS3, and hopes senpai will notice her.

Here's some recent shots of her:

Go give her Facebook page a like! Hopefully someday, she can be as famous as that one person I originally mistook her for.

Thing is, cosplay folks don't just do cosplay. They also make outfits for people, general modeling, etc. Famous enough cosplayers can go to cons for free, as well - and Jessica Nigri definitely isn't the only famous professional cosplayer. There are plenty more; like anything, it just requires effort and persistence.

That means you, too, I3uster, could be a German rap legend.
Actually JNig doesn't actually do cosplay anymore if you think cosplay has anything to do with craftsmanship since she gets all her stuff made. Her and Yaya are pretty much the only ones in the west that can actually decently live off cosplay without the aforementioned hobo lifestyle. Commission work is not as lucrative as you might think because people often offer props for super cheap compared to the labor put into this stuff. Yaya more or less finances herself by presenting cosplayers as awful nerds on TV and getting paid to speak for cosplay while JNig is running on sponsorships due to her fanbase apparently being lucrative enough for this kind of stuff. It's like some kind of bizarre sugar daddy pyramid scheme.

cosplay is my #1 fetish and the fact that the scene is either retarded or toxic to a hilarious degree is just a bonus

Well, the professional scene i guess. If you jsut do it for a hobby, there are some real nice people there. I think i told this story already in the past, but probably one of my best cosplay experiences was when i and a bunch of others where ont he con too long and couldnt set up camp at the camping lot, so we spent the night wandering through the city and sleeping at McDonalds, and i got to spend some nice time with a very nice Nel-cosplayer.
Sadly, i dont have any contact with her anymore...

I want to go to a German con too, but it needs to be one where my personal Lord and Savior Melonpan goes to, iirc he's always con touring though iunno if he stopped with that.

I have no idea who you're talking about. But if you want Melonpan, i can give you a recipe, and they sell it on most cons anyways.
