Today is a special day

Six years ago today, my goddaughter was born. I have been blessed to know this intelligent, beautiful, fierce child ever since she was nine months old, when I first held her for her baptism into the Catholic Church. I have watched her learn to walk, learn to talk, learn to read, learn to do math, all long before her peers. I have been with her as her curious mind questioned the world around her and developed in leaps and bounds. I have taken her to New York City and to Anime Expo, to parks, malls, stores, and the wilderness. I've taught her as much as I can in those times we are together, of reading, of writing, of telling stories and enjoying stories, of playing games and video games, of honesty and pride in being true to her own self. I've seen her dressed as elegantly as any princess, I've seen her as sweaty as any tomboy. I've seen her use her wisdom to console those mourners at my uncle's death and I've seen her weep because she was not allowed to touch books because she was too young yet to read. I am proud of this unique, special child, this goddaughter of mine with whom I am blessed to share such a special bond. Happy birthday, ahijada! I'm proud of you and I love you very much!
