So went with KENTA to see a subbed Kaze Tachinu last night (although pretty sure that shit was dubtitled given the discrepencies between what was written and what was actually said.. then again it is Disney tl-ing/releasing so they might have chosen to sub it that way cus HURRHURR AUDIENCE CANT UNDERSTAND IMPLIED SHIT, NEED SPUHNFEHD)

But yeah,

I thought it was okay.

It is very rooted in reality... for a Miyazaki film. There were a few fantastical elements to the non-dream sequence visuals, and dat hair flare... OHMYGOHD there was so much of it.
Especially from this guy:

Who is totally not supposed to be Miyazaki.... NOT supposed to be him *shifty eyes*
(best character int he movie BY FAR)

In sum, plane boners everywhere, Anno doing hilarious Japanese Harry Potter, decent enough romance (how they get together is pretty meh/a little rushed, but after they're a couple it's pretty damn good), and so much wink wink nudge nudge shit about being a creator/"artist"
So while it didn't really strike the huge chord with me I was hoping for, and wasn't his best work, I'd probably watch it again.


But yeah, still a much better movie than Frozen

    I haven't actually seen a lot of Miyazaki's works.

    I saw it dubbed with the UW anime club on Saturday. The boss is voiced by Martin Short, and it is amazing.

    Basically same old Miyazaki stuff: beautiful nature scenes, anti-military, little sister looks like Chihiro, the usual.

    It didn't really whitewash anything, and it didn't really touch on WW2 that much either. Lots of buildup to the war, then the movie kinda ends. It's not even really that anti-military. At least, not compared to something like Mononoke. It's a love letter though, and it's good at what it did. I thought so at least.
