A Swan Song for my First Fandom.

Rate this Entry
I've been active on the internet since I was about thirteen or fourteen; that was the time I joined my first fandom. It was my first experience with an online forum to discuss a media that interested me, it was my first time interacting with other people from all over the world. It was a series of firsts for me, in more ways than one. ... I was a very innocent pre-teen, don't judge me.

My very first fandom was American Dragon: Jake Long. And today, for the first time in several years, I signed back onto the forum (LOL, my account was still active after four years... funny, that.), and deleted my account. I know it probably wasn't needed, but... I felt it was time. Close the door on it for good.

And it's... an odd sensation. A lot of sadness, a lot of pain. I can't say being there was probably the best thing for me, but it was my first, and I always held it close to my heart even after it was all said and done. Saying goodbye to it is... kind of sad for me.

But it made me who I am today, and you know what? As fucked up as I am now, I'd rather be how I am. I rather like me.

So, goodbye, AmDrag. It was a fun two or three years, and it led me to far better places.

My first fandom was the Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, but at the time there was no internets for me to post my fanfic.

    Complete with Mary Sue.

Oh God. I had so many OCs in my AmDrag fanfiction. It was horrifying.

*hug* Closing the door on anything that was a big part of you is hard, but sometimes? It's just time to let go.

And if it helps... I rather like you too. ^_^

It happens. I've gone back and scoured my history man a time (bad fanfiction and all), which is partially why this username is BL-specific.

Keep a record of the place on a file on a thumbdrive, just for reference. It's amazing to come back to it years later and see how you've changed

This is, pretty much, my first fandom - at least, the first I joined online that had me participate with a group. But I've lost things like that before, so I can sort of understand. You have my sympathies, for what they're worth.

If it makes you feel any better:

The first place I ever talked to anyone online was the Nuklearpower Forums, which aside from being about 8-bit Theater, is also a Final Fantasy fansite.

The first fanfic I ever attempted was a Sonic the Hedgehog fanfic. I could never finish it. I could always start a new one, though . . .

And my earliest fandom . . . I don't know the earliest, but my memories goes as far back as when I was 4, and back then, I was a fan of Super Mario Bros. the Looney Tunes, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I'm still a fan of the first two even today.

I honestly can't remember what fandom I ever joined was first. I do know I'm an old-timey veteran of GameFAQs (I was there basically from 2001-2004 or so) and after that, I got heavy into the emulation scene (which I'm still pretty on top of) from 2004-2007.

2007-2009 or so was me keeping Project2612 up to date. I really do need to delegate some authority to one of the more regular posters over there.

2010-2011 was a short-but-voluminous stint at Melty Bread, and from there I decided I didn't like so much of the board politics and transitioned over to here. I think I technically joined in the summer of 2011. It makes me a young'un, I know.

At the same time, when BL needed help getting on its feet, I saw a chance to make that happen. A few donations later, we had this lovely board. Now we have these blogs, because I wanted to add them for a long time and felt kind of guilty that other people esentially paid so I could upgrade the license to VB4.

So here we are. I've been to plenty of forums in my decade-long tour of the internets... some longer than others. What's next? Well, I have a pretty good idea...but that ties into my hopefully soon-to-be-job.

And since we're talking fanfics... I think the first fanfic I ever wrote was a 10-page one for Gatchaman (or specifically, its last US adaptation as G-Force.) I think that was in 1994 or 1995. It was on real paper. It's obviously long, long lost.
