Spinoffs are fine. Write what you enjoy. That's the best way to motivate yourself. Just know in terms of response, Grail Wars are usually what get you readers. Siriel did not heed this wisdom and became a broken shell of a man.

However, every now and then someone breaks through. Check out some of Bloble's recent fics. He made some spinoffs; one of them was entirely OCs, but grounded in Nasuverse mythos and such. (Even those didn't get as much response as Grail Wars / canon stuff though. That format is inherently suited to generating interest.)

Moreover, fanfiction is slow right now so the sweet spot between effort and ego-stroking compliments is 3-6 chapter long fics dealing with some kind of massive fan-pleaser subject. Would suggest Ayako but Arashi nailed that one to the wall so I got nothing

The length isn't really even the important part in that situation, it's that having chapters makes people post more than just a oneshot (opinion but I think it's pretty accurate). Could even split a single 8000 oneshot 3 ways.

Yeah, having multiple updates brings in more readers since it's in the limelight more. But I wouldn't split up the chapters too much because if they become small enough, you lack enough content per chapter to have anything to really comment on.

I had/have an idea for a Canaan 2 fic which would include some people from other TM works, Touko in particular.

the difficulty in writing canaan fics is in determining what that show was even about

like, there was a virus or some shit, and blonde ryougi has not-actually-synesthesia, and then the americans bombed shanghai, and then everyone went out to the chinese desert and liang qi died like a bitch and then there was a train

I dunno I believe I managed to grasp the themes and characters fairly well.

that's the most common iteration, though there is an alright pic of Touko and Zoe doing a costume swap

EDIT: really, though, I can't see KnK/AoT being very interesting. as a concept, where exactly does it have to go, beyond "Character X exists in Setting Y and this is somehow cool"?

Also it works with how I read AoT but I think I have a minority reading of it that I don't want to try and type on phone.
