No Man's Sky

I don't really understand what people expected from No Man's Sky.

It's an open world game from an indie dev team of 15 people. Vanilla Skyrim gets old after a couple hours, and that was made by a team with access to far greater resources and developmental knowledge. It's obvious the studio was going to have to compensate for breadth with depth from the very beginning.

Procedurally generated games have always faced the problem of having extremely repetitive tells once you recognize the base models, and when you compound that with the need to fill such a vast and uncountable number of problems you only exacerbate that problem. I knew this was going to be the case from the very beginning, so combined with my lack of intrigue for space titles I did not expect to like it.

The result was that I didn't like it. No problems there.

It delivered on most of its promises, neglecting some, but honestly almost every successful triple A title also lacks some features they claimed to have during publicity shows. (look at Ubisoft. Look at Bethesda)

I can kind of see the problem with the big price tag, but then there are also so many other games with ridiculous price tags that do not come close to fulfilling them, and you don't see this kind of backlash with respect to them. I'm pretty sure there are more than a few space games that fill that description too.

In the end, really just can't fathom what would cause this massive wave of anger and disappointment. What the hell were people actually expecting?

I kept hearing it sold as "art."

    Art is a buzzword.

Has been for a few centuries now.

Because what I'm saying is that there's no such thing as art.

Wrong, I have turned my flatulence into art. I call it: Fart

I mean that's advertising you know - you sell the dream that the product is supposed to clue you into, not the actual product. So when the dream is leave your neckbeard-ass life and become one with the only video game you will never need in a true alternate reality well there you go

    Basically this.

Also, I have a feeling the price point was not their choice. Pretty sure Sony would've been most unhappy if their $60 version was being undercut by a $30 PC one.
