So why, you may ask, am I going back to something I haven't worked on in months, when I have three other fics crying for attention, and exams in about a month? Part of it is guilt, because I know it has fans who have been waiting patiently, part of it is a need for something (relatively) light and mindless after a long and grueling week . . . But the bulk of it can be summed up in two words: The Muppets.
Unfortunately, I never got around to seeing the latest film in theatres, but I bought it this week, and found it a genuine blast. I wasn't too impressed with their last few efforts - Muppets in Space was boring within fifteen minutes, and neither of the last two holiday specials will ever match The Muppet Family Christmas - so my hopes for this film weren't high, though I wanted them to be. Fortunately, Jason Segel is a major Muppets fan, the main reason he pushed for the movie to be made in the first place, and it shows in every aspect. While a modern movie, it's definitely a Muppets movie, as well.
And as a family movie, it works. The plot is simplistic, but the best ones usually are. They don't break into song often enough to be annoying about it, and the songs aren't too cloying, either. And the messages the movie conveys are simple, without beating you over the head with them. The one I particularly enjoy is the one about the Muppets themselves - that there's still room in the world for them, despite all the changes over the years.
I still miss Jim Henson - but movies like this tell me that the Muppets can live on without him. I hope for many more.
