More Kara no Kyoukai!

So I finally got around to reading more Garden of Sinners or whatever it's called. I finished part 5. I now understand why so many people call it a mindblow. It was satisfying.

This means I'm somewhere in part 6 right now, with the Reien academy and Ryougi spending time with Azaka. Haven't lost interest yet.

Ya know, of all the main protags Nasu's done, Ryougi is my favorite. Here's a graph of what I mean: Ryougi Shiki > Tohno Shiki > Emiya Shirou. I'd say Ryougi is my fifth-favorite character in all of the Nasuverse, ranking behind only a cute little German girl, one of the awesomest tsunderes ever, another one of the awesomest tsunderes ever, and some blonde vampire chick.

But here's what I want to say now; it seems Nasu is better at writing girls than boys. Despite being male, he seems more adept at writing female characters. Am I crazy, or is that really the case?

Oh yeah, a question. I haven't seen the Garden of Sinners anime . . . yet, so answer this for me. In part 6, the heroines are looking for "fairies." Now, in the Japanese version, do they mean "Yousei", or "Youkai"? I know the two aren't always alike, (and you can thank Touhou for teaching me that) so . . . which one? That's all for today.

I assume they mean "yousei", because magical girl anime have taught me that means fairy while "youkai" is a demon.

Yousei. Fake faeries are a main part of Oblivion Recorder.

    Absolutely, yes.

Despite that the Nasuverse sure as hell isn't feminist, it does portray the feminine in a fascinating and well-explored way. Women are explored in all their facets, and - while the H-games can be boiled down to targets to win over - the characterization the player gets in getting to know said characters is better versed than other works (Kaonon, Air, etc)

I particularly like how he writes older and mature women like Caster and Touko. It's nice to see fleshed-out characters who aren't still in their teens. Old folks unite!

The OAV is very faithful to the books, too... except Chapter 6. In that one, the story is really watered down compared to the books, and Azaka gets far more of the time - the parts with Ryougi are very much minimized...
    Spoiler:
...and Godword is made much more of an overt villain, while the books make it much more ambiguous (it needles the line between that and him having actual good intentions but doing it the worng way).

I'm fine with Azaka getting the screen time (I like her, after all) but I don't see why they'd water it down. The series is definitely graphic enough within the first episode as it shows one of the girls that took a head-dive off the Fujou Building, and episode 3 opens with Fujino being raped, for Christ's sake. Why they watered down what happened to Tachibana (and indeed, changed some of the details) is beyond me - apparently, maybe because Fujino can pass for an adult physically, it's okay, but someone with a more girlish body like Tachibana being raped isn't. Probably the biggest mistake with that series, which is a shame. It's still a good episode, but once you know the book, it simply doesn't compare.

The only reasonable explanation I can think of is that they wanted a somewhat lighter, one-hour episode after the two hours of sheer Gainaxing that was Episode 5, and to set people up for the more sinister horrors of Episode 7, which also runs two hours. If that's the case, it was a bad decision, IMO - they really should've kept it dark. The series isn't meant to be very "light" after all.

...And there's still no mention of Ryougi Mana and Mirai Fukuin/Gospel of the Future...

Because it is hard to market apathetic adult to otakus, while it is very easy to market moe wincest magical girl. I can understand their heavy emphasis on Azaka.

I don't mind moe wincest magical girl either (though Azaka is hardly a magical girl...) but I still don't see why they'd make six episodes out of seven pretty serious and grim, and then for that remaining straggler... they cheer it up super-high compared to the book. It feels like it's kind of cheapening it. Or did Nasu decide it was too dark even for that?

    It's a secret to everybody.

And my complaint about Mana is still valid. That "epilogue" they teased fucking crushed me, because I REALLY hoped that'd be Mirai Fukuin.

Yousei, I see. That makes sense.

@DP You've told me that already. Regardless, I will stick with the novel for the time being.

Also, now that you mention it, making a Nasu worker lighter in tone just feels wrong. He's one of the darkest storytellers I know. (Must be why he and Urobuchi work so well together.) I haven't read anything else yet, but I trust it won't disappoint me.
