Zelenia and Mochizuki Additional Information

The Zelenia Family:


The Zelenia is an ancient family, dating back as far as the 8th century BC when they began to collect knowledge and act as an official group. In those days they acted in service of the Goddess Artemis, worshiping and revering her alongside Hecate and Selene. This led them being a group which due to their faith and ties to the gods earned them a special kind of blessing, taking the form of a unique magecraft and enhanced physical abilities for their female members. Many years later the males of the clan formed as a branch situated in the east, and refereed to themselves as the Mochizuki. The groups formed a mutual system where those under the Zelenia would take in any girls married into their family or born to either clan (as their arts and magecraft would work only with females) and the Mochizuki would take in any males children or men who marry into the clan (technically the Mochizuki are a branch of the Zelenia and they are treated as two branches of one combined unit).

The age, amount of both resources, expertise, and the unique nature of the Zelenia & Mochizuki families, as well as their outlook towards magecraft make them an interesting case even among the moonlight world. The families specifically worship the moon and beings connected to it rather than specific divine spirits, a tradition dating back even to their ancient past. Although many scoff at their arts as being impractical and aged, the sheer mystery and power the Zelenia hold is enough that the Zelenia members can act as the functional equivalent of the Clock tower’s executors, and few would directly challenge them. In terms of sheer power it's believed that on a night where the moon is full, where their arts are strongest (near the Mediterranean), an experienced possessor of the crest of the Zelenia could possibly match or kill the current holder of the Bartholmeloi’s family crest in battle. However, due to the fact that often the transplant of the Zelenia crest leaves its holders unable to physically participate in such events and the risk that such a bout in the destruction of one or both crests, neither family has ever tested this hypothesis.

Both clans are also noted for their very loose sense of morality and are very willing to perform highly amoral acts and associate with heinous people and acts to get political power or raise capital. The Zelenia alongside the Wandering Sea are believed they have supported Pablo Escobar in a gambit with other smaller magus groups local to South and Latin America to gain power and raise capital. Other acts include that the Zelenia are rumored to have either have collaborated with the North American magus group (an organization they have performed some military contracts with in past) to support the rise of Enron and using a group of hypnotized executives reap millions from them. The family has ties with BP, General Motors, and at least 3 other fortune 500 companies and has been believed to cover up serval cases of illegal dealings in the past with their companies Moreover, the Zelenia are believed to have supported at least 3 dictatorships over the years, are thought to have ties to at least 10 different current or former leaders, have moles with another 15 or 20 through high ranking officials or their contacts or close associates in either the American Magus association (which they are believed to have amicable ties with) or the Wandering sea itself.


The Zelenia family’s exact origin, that is to say when then the first member who would come to shape their family’s history is unclear, but it is known they were active in some form before the end of the age of the gods and current best estimates cite that the first person who started gathering and cataloging information and followers was active sometime in the 8th century BC as cited prior. However, weren’t technically a magi family at this point as in this capacity they were mere worshippers to the goddess Selene, Artemis, and Hecate, or rather the concept of the moon they were connected with, and remained in such capacity until after the fall of the age of the gods. After the closing of the Age of the gods the group still maintained a connection with the concept of the moon and beings devoted to it (kind of like a tether) and used this blessing to form the foundation of their magecraft, based on the traditions and methods of worship they practiced before the gods left their world. This magecraft took mostly the form of sacrifices at certain times, ceremonial hunts, the practicing of chastity (which any children born done in highly specific rituals) and continued devotion to the moon and the gods and deities associated with it. In return they were given enhanced physical abilities and magical spells much Hecate's children of Artemis' hunters and other capabilities through their spells. The main basis of the Zelenia’s worship was that the moon is a plane holding divine knowledge and wisdom beyond humanity and serves as a terminal holding the records of mankind’s past and present.

Due to the continued service to the gods, some have drawn connections between the Zelenia and the Fraga family in Scandinavia due to both having served the gods (although in the Zelenia’s case they served the Moon), having earned a blessing from the gods they served which lingers to this day, and due to still holding true to their values and tradition even after the age of the gods ended. Setting up roots in Rome, the Zelenia worshipped the new identities given to their goddesses and also expanded seek out a greater understanding of the mysteries of the moon, as without extensive contact to the gods they needed another way to understand the wisdom of the lunar plane, thus they sought to understand the mysteries, concepts, and deities related to the moon as a new means of enlightenment to the lunar realm. To this end, they went around the entire Mediterranean area during the Roman era, learning of gods and goddesses of the moon, and the traditions associated with them and sometimes taking an artifact or two here and there to add to the collection they kept. Among the gods and goddesses they had records of Arume, Ataegina, Thoth, and Xors Jutrobog.

However, seeing the writing on the wall regarding the rise of Christianity in Rome, the Zelenia left for the reaches of the Gaul to escape Christianity before they may be persecuted for their faith and to find lands with higher mystery to establish as their own. The primary reason for their fear/hate of the church is that the family has had many dealings with creatures who the church sees as antithetical to humanity and themselves. The Zelenia had active contact with Gransung Blackmore at one point, although any transcripts of what they may have discussed are kept private by the Zelenia, has studied werewolves and their activity in the past (sometimes willingly allowing populations to proliferate near villages or deliberately infect people), researched the dead apostle’s curse of regression & how their powers tied to the moon, and has great interest in the true ancestors as “children of the ultimate one of the moon”. As such, although the family has never had any members recorded as becoming a dead apostle (at least in the records held by the magus organization) they are not trusted by the Church and Clock Tower and treated as being of high risk to become a member of the vampiric species. However this claims cannot be said to be without merit, even to this very day it has been rumored the Zelenia may be seeking out the eyes of the Crimson moon, viewing them as a treasure beyond human worth and a gateway of reaching the lands of which he dwelled (and some claim they view the Crimson Moon as an embassy of the moon and a vessel holder of it’s wisdom).

After leaving Rome, the Zelenia continued Northeast and settled in the far lands of Britain in around 200 AD, both because of their high mystery and great distance from Rome and the church's influence During this time they added the Anglo-Saxon tradition of Monday / Moon’s day, the witching hour and the goddess Arianrhod (or that is the name they gave her as their ancestors couldn’t pin down a consistent name to give the deity in the tumultuous country) to their arts. Following a decline in mystery in Britain and Christianity taking root after Pope Augustine’s mission, the Zelenia finally left the British isles to head to their current home of Finland (due to it remaining outside of the scope of Christianity and the general eyes of the world). During this time they continued their studies on beasts and practiced them on actual people (despite magecraft becoming more secretive at the time) and set up a territory and a forest they themselves had total control over, for the purpose of their rituals and studies (as well as preserving it’s mystery). While in Finland, Kuu was added to their repertoire of gods and goddesses who they held as sacred due to being connected with the moon.

Sometime between the 9th and the 11th century the Zelenia joined the Wandering Sea, who had gained knowledge of the family and held them in esteem for their persistence in the mysteries from the age of the gods. The Zelenia agreed to join them as they would find no allies in the Bartholmeloi family due to their past in the Clock Tower and they disliked the Clock Tower’s beliefs of trying to reduce magecraft to a science (something which rather than being based on carefully refined or modified traditions with some scientific inquiry, was based on mostly scientific inquiry and research with magecraft being a means to an end). On the other end they disliked Atlas’ ideas of continuing the god’s legacy, but abandoning their traditions, seeing it as disrespectful and foolish. The gods long predated humanity and far outstripped mankind, to try and refine humanity through three woefully inadequate aspects (the fragile body, the inadequate mind, and the lowly* human soul) rather than to seek evolution through the revelation and loyalty to their predecessors was foolishness. At most Atlas’ methods would always fail in the Zelenia’s eyes and at worst they would outright become antithetical to what they claimed the gods left as a legacy and what humanity truly required.

With the Wandering Sea’s backing, the Zelenia family was able to remain in Finland in spite of Christianity's eventual spread to their land and were able to develop a method of developing a crest (as the majority of their time before then was based on passing down knowledge and teaching, but not magic circuits). The methods of the Wandering Sea also allowed them to refine their methods into what they now practice as their magecraft. While some may gawk at the length of time it took the Zelenia family to find a means of preserving their magic circuits, within the eyes of the Zelenia themselves, so long as they held their traditions close, their magic circuits were secondary. Moreover, compared to the Wodmine and Animusphere family who also boasts a legacy going back to the age of the gods, they similarly only have a crest of only around 1/3 their family’s true age. Moreover, due to the great effort in passing down their knowledge their magic crest, while weak for it's age, boasts a startling amount of depth and mystery due to reflecting mysteries and wisdom of around 2500 years rather than 1000. This time may have also been around when the Zelenia family grew in interest to many astrological mages as more than just a mere curiosity. However, as their methods conceive only of the moon and the earth and nothing else, it could be considered a dead end for such groups in spite of their advanced knowledge on the moon.

In more recent days the Zelenia family developed a branch family called the Mochizuki. It formed in 1668 following ~45 years of research and study of Eastern traditions of the moon, mainly focused on Chinese and Japanese myth, and inquiries into manipulation of their magic rituals to allow for their family to branch out and better understand them. The Mochizuki family exists in relative harmony (although there is a distance between them) with the Zelenia and currently exists as a pillar of support to the Zelenia family itself, with their magecrafts being able to be called different sides of the same coin. Another notable aspect to the Zelenia is the sheer amount of resources the family has and the breadth of knowledge on all matters related to the moon. If any magi could be called experts on lunar phenomena, magecraft, and mystery then it would be them. In terms of lunar deities of Mediterranean origin, or magecraft and mysteries based on the lunar phenomena or lunar deities from the Mediterranean area their knowledge reins supreme. In a fight against such magecraft they would easily be able to dissect the meaning and methods behind a spell or rituals’s function. However, in terms of Eastern lunar deities, the Mochizuki are still in a learning phase regarding them, and their wisdom could be matched or exceeded by older families based on such studies. Even still, the Zelenia are considered one of the old houses held in high esteem by the Wandering Sea and are rumored to hold many priceless relics (including treasures from the lost temple of Artemis) it can be claimed that the family is no less powerful than any of the lords of the clock tower.

In spite of the changes over the years, one thing which remains true about the Zelenia is the sheer effort the group puts in accurately cataloging and preserving verbal and physical documentation about their arts, the moon, and their studies. To this degree it is said that children in the Zelenia family are taught to remember poems, stories, and verses word for word (they are fairly harsh in doing this, sometimes mentally implanting it into their minds) about such material. This is partly as the Zelenia’s rites are based on the methods they established, which from the foundation of the bond they had with the gods and by proxy the moon before the age of the gods ended. Even the slightest bit of alteration, if not done carefully, to the foundation renders the thin connection to the reverse side of the world, which still lingers even to this day, null and void, rendering their entire magecraft system worthless. This is due to the fact that the only reason the Zelenia even have such a connection is because of the blessing they received and the rites they created before the age of the gods ended (which is why only females born to their family can use their arts), and as such, they may never change the way their arts are practiced in a way that does not align with the way things were before the age of the gods ended.

This is also why the skills of Lord El Melloi II in improving magecraft despite interesting the Zelenia at first were deemed useless to them as any major deviation from their foundation could render entire rituals ineffective. The best comparison that has been given to the Zelenia’s magecraft is that it is like iron, strong (especially as the weight of its mystery trumps almost anything else around not from the age of the gods), but very brittle, and compared to steel, impractical in many ways. In this viewpoint, the Zelenia and their arts are considered by some to be a dead end, as although they can make new spells and such and deepen their understanding of their mysteries, they can never fundamentally change or shift their foundation lest all their spells and power be rendered useless.

Zelenia relations

The Zelenia have historically prided themselves on their relations with individuals of affluence and the connections they have with old blood in the moonlight world. The family has, since the inception of their relationship with the Wandering Sea often found themselves among very like minded individuals, people who pride themselves on tradition and the age of their mysteries. In that sense the Wandering Sea and the Zelenia have become as synonymous with each other as the Bartholmelloi family and the Clock tower. The group themselves is often seen as a kingmaker of sorts inside the Wandering Sea in times of organizational or political shifts and upheaval (as the wandering sea is less 1 cohesive organization so much as multiple different groups which collaborate and work together often vying for power and competing for resources). In effect, whoever the family throws their back behind at any given time is liable to become very powerful, very rapidly, because of this the group themselves also holds enormous sway to the point of them being given blatant favoritism in the organization.

An example of this is when the Zelenia discovered the Circle Arrianrhod (sometimes called the Silver Circle or the Silver Clock), a declining magus group originally in the area of Wales. Due to the rise of the Magus association they were driven to Ireland, and were at the time headquartered in Carlow with a smaller detachment in Waterford. The Zelenia saw potential in them and made contact with the group. The Zelenia looked at their Silver Circle's research and their studies and started to provide assistance and advocate for them to investigate the matters of lunar cycles, matters related to mental condition of warriors, especially in Celtic myth, and further their research into the manipulation time and destiny. Roughly 200-250 years that the Zelenia in 1606 raised the motion of adopting the group into the Wandering Sea's mantle, furthermore they advocated the division of the astrology organization into 2 different groups which would better reflect the nature of their studies, with the new group being focused on the moon due to the nature of it as a celestial body with fear more ties to Earth/Gaia than any other known body. While not unheard of, as this had happened before when the astrology division had been divided to form an organization based on Planetary studies (which looked into the terminals of the planet, true ancestors, and the consciousness of the world and how it in theory develops), it was noted to be a bold move by their competitors at the time.

Even more bold was the motion to place the Silver Circle in a position of significant power in this group, which if their results were successful, would see them essentially rise to a status of political affluence they had not enjoyed in centuries. However, when considering these matters the timing is to be noted as key in understanding the Zelenia's motive. The Clock tower had recently seen an influx in geniuses like Leonardo da Vinci, Paracelsus, and others, this was likely a reaction to that and a bid to try and amass power to counter that. This is because despite being technically aligned, all 3 parties in the Magus Association scarcely get along and hate to see another in a position of power over them. Thus the clock tower's rise, but their subsequent fighting with the Church provided an opportunity to get even in the Zelenia's eyes. Another example of the dyanmics of the Magus organization is the rumors which emphasize the Wandering Sea & Atlas' isolationist nature, which are believed to be actively promoted, if not necessarily started, by the Clock tower to drive more scholarships (and test subjects) to them. According to these rumors, the Wandering Sea is rumored to have little if any communication with the rest of the world even their own "partners", however despite some elements of truth in the narratives of isolationism behind Atlas and the Wandering Sea, the reality is a bit more pragmatic.

While the Wandering Sea (and Atlas for that matter) do prefer to stay to themselves, by necessity they do discuss matters with others in the Magus organization or other organizations (both to keep the Church at bay and maintain secrecy and relevance in the changing times) and recruit families and talented magi who strike their fancy (to replace those who die or leave). Part of the methods are that the Wandering Sea and Atlas are "rumored", although it is all but a fact (despite neither party ever have confirmed or denied it), to have extensive spy networks, Atlas with the Eyes of Argus (mages and artificial humans and animals familiars (as well as other means like divination) who gather intelligence of matters or people of high interest or concern to them) and the Wandering Sea with their own seers, mages, and the Zelenia (whose work as mercenaries acts as an excellent cover for gathering intelligence). Thus the move to recruit the silver circle, although unprecedented in the number of people they were inducting at once was far from reckless, and was a calculated maneuver by the Zelenia.

The true testament to how well it worked and the power of the Zelenia is that the group now exists as a proper organization within the Wandering sea which is in high collaboration with (or dependent on who you ask, manipulated by) the Zelenia. However, aside from their relations with the Wandering sea and their poor relations Atlas and the Church (detailed in their history). The Zelenia has mercenary contracts and a somewhat friendly business relationship with the American magus organization and through the Wandering Sea connection's to one or two smaller magi groups in the middle-east who follow old school methods of cursing and spiritual research. But, the clock tower however is another story. While there have been friendly relations and encounters with individual members or families, a high degree of hostility and rivalry exists between the Zelenia and the Bartholmelloi. Moreover the Zelenaia and the Wandering Sea themselves brand the entirety of the organization of the clock tower as "heretical" for discarding traditions and stable established methods in the face of flimsy new ones and reducing magecraft to a science with their policies.

As a result, for years there have been active competition, sometimes breaking out into minor incidents between the two parties which leads to tense and very fragmented communications even at the best of times (although it is still better than between Atlas and the Wandering Sea [you couldn't get those two to sit down and agree on anything even if the world was ending]). The sole exception to the rule of tensions between the Wandering Sea and the Clock tower is the department of Archeology, as they inherently do believe in tradition and hold great respect for the Wandering Sea as experts in the field of knowledge about the age of the gods. As such they are by record the only people to reliably and consistently have good and mutually friendly relationships with either the Wandering Sea and the Zelenia (although in the Zelenia's case the Astrology department is a close second). The final note is that the Zelenia have somewhat distant, but friendly relations with their Eastern Branch in the Mochizuki, and while they think of them as lesser than themselves they still inherently are "a cut above the rest of the world" due to their belief in tradition and worship of the moon.

The Mochizuki Family:


The Mochizuki family, as opposed to their counterparts in Europe who take up the role of warriors (with their acts of battle as a form of prayer), mostly focus on the roles of ritualists and priests (although they are capable of combat arts). They mainly serve as counterparts whose arts are more based on Asian deities and ideas related to the moon (especially those of Chinese and Japanese origin), they also are speculated to perform several rituals involved in the creation of some of the specialized mystic codes used by the Zelenia family, and hold several powerful rituals and spells of their own. In spite of their own crest being much younger than that of their parent family, their arts are still of the same foundation and make use of the same connection as the Zelenia's (albeit modified in how it functions), even if the beings they are connecting to are different. As such, while the age of their crest and some of their spells is lesser, it still holds a chunk of the mystery held by the Zelenia’s own system. At the given time it is believed the Mochizuki are busy gathering and studying material related to the supposed Moon tribe of Japanese myth.

One major, yet understand aspect of the Mochizuki is their mental disciple, it is cited by many to be "an exercise in equal parts futility and madness" to try and break into a Mochizuki's mind or use mental interference on them. The futility comes in with the sheer difficulty of the task, doing such to a trained adult is very difficult and simply not worth it unless you are and expert on mental interference. Even then the usage of certain types of mental interference like illusions or specifically delving into their mind and memories may not work right, or worse could get the person who is performing the magecraft hurt badly. The Zelenia and Mochizuki do not perceive the world normally, and due to their magecraft this increases and grows more pronounced with age or certain usages of their magecraft, as such illusions may not work properly on them if at all in some states (unless you are on the level of deceiving the world itself, and even then if they modify the world with lunar concepts that may fail too), and as for infiltrating the mind of someone in this condition, well such madness could be considered infective and result in your own psyche being damaged or worsening just as their does. In one known case a mage subject to it lost control of their circuits in their heart, rupturing it (due to their own illusion spell backfiring and amplified with the mental condition of the Mochizuki causing it's effects to be amplified greatly by inhuman perspectives and concepts)*.

((Although to be fully technical due to the mechanisms by which the magecraft of the Zelenia and Mochizuki also work it is inadvisable to use mental interference on either of them once they start to surpass the age of 30 to 35 [40 is probably the safe maximum] as that becomes dangerous.))

*To be technical what the mage was doing was imposing himself into the Mochizuki male's mind (he was 44 at the time) and then trying to impose a mental image of reality upon him. This world be so terrifying that it would distract him and allow the former a cheap shot to kill the Mochizuki. However, since his mental probe is partly subject to the victim's mind, he himself saw how the Mochizuki perceived the world, including eldritch concepts of lunar origin, which either have little or no earthly parallel and may contradicts earthly laws. This then caused the former to lose control of his own magical circuits and his grip on the spell to lessen. Since he was in another person's mind with the two being conjoined, the Mochizuki was able to seize control of the illusion and turn it back on him with it now being the sum product of both people's minds it now was "a terrifying illusion containing things most human minds aren't prepared to withstand". This then caused the poor mage to have his flight or fight response activate so hard that when he activated his circuits he accidentally "hit the gas too hard" (so to speak) and caused his own circuits in his heart (one of the places impacted by the fight or flight response) to have too much magical energy produced, too rapidly, not allowing it to be used or distributed quickly enough due to the inherent resistance of flesh to the movement of magical energy (thus limiting the rate at which flesh can conduct and move magical energy) causing the circuit to both rapidly overheat and swell before rupturing, resulting in his own heart being burst from within.


Despite technically being a branch of the main family and delegation of them, as well as the moderate to above average amount of communication between the two, the Mochizuki are noted to be a little odd in their relationship with the Zelenia. Of particular note is the high amount of autonomy from the main branch and the fact that despite sponsoring the whole of the branch, it is rare for the Zelenia to personally involve themselves with any 1 member of the Mochizuki, save the head of the family. This is in part due to the separation in methods between the two and also a necessity born out of the distance between the two parties, which in the early years of the Mochizuki lead to the Zelenia had very little power to effectively control or coordinate with them, leading to a more hands off approach forming as a result. This is not to say they don’t share the same goals or both desire to advance their crafts, but the ways they do so often are applicable more-so to their own families rather than the clan as a whole (thus allowing them to not have to share results as one family's data would be meaningless to the other). Although some strides have been made to bring the two branches closer in recent years, there still is very much a sense of independence in the two families which has promoted a sort of belief of competition between the two.

The Mochizuki managed to scrape their way into Japan in spite of the Sakoku Edict of 1635 by ingratiating themselves with the Onmyōji’s association based around the “three holy mountains” of Mount Fuji, Mount Tate, and Mount Haku in Central Honshu. The Onmyōdō organization’s power stretches to Northern Honshu and with a “loose but tangible” presence in Hokkaido. The Mochizuki are noted to have rather poor relations with the demon hunter organization, whose main foothold exists in Kyushu and Southern part of Honshu, due to a long standing enmity over the Onmyōdō gaining a lot more political power and attention than their contemporaries (which due to the Mochizuki associated with the Onmyōdō this rubbed off on them). Due to their deep understanding of Asian and Japanese culture and religion, the good word of the Onmyōdō, and their own words of commitment and loyalty to the shogunate and the emperor they were allowed in Japan as exceptions to the rule by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. They would work to study and teach Japanese culture and preserve their knowledge and traditions, making contact with the loose conglomeration of clans which make up the main bulk of the moonlight world’s activity in Hokkaido, and doing what they could for the Onmyōdō. This in turn saw them eventually granted access and a limited lease (regulated to a certain number of times a year) on the forest of Aokigahara which the Onmyōdō control, and they have been in ongoing negotiations for decades over potentially being allowed to research on the three holy mountains themselves (as they are considered the places closest to Takamagahara where the Shinto gods once dwelled).

In the 1750s the Mochizuki were granted the rare honor of being given a sect of land to govern and set up base in Northern Honshu, effectively becoming a buffer between the varying clans in people with power in Hokkaido (who had their own interests and didn’t care for the Onmyōdō butting into their land and affairs) and the Onmyōdō in Central Honshu. They set up shop in the province of Akita, becoming the rulers of the magical side of affairs for the Satake clan. This area serves as their central hub even to this day and they are the caretakers of Shirakami-Sanchi, where they regulate and control access to parts of the land they choose. Of note is that they hold the areas of highest secrecy are the Anmon no Taki falls (which according to the rest of the world, literally doesn’t exist or dried up years ago (they have it under several bounded fields and nobody except them, permitted mages, or those of the Onmyōji organization is allowed to go near it)). Held in very close secret is the cave behind the falls which is one of several locations debated to be one of several candidates for the real Amano-Iwato or perhaps the entrance to the underworld that Izanagi found and blocked up years ago. Suffice to say that the cave is considered a sight nobody except those with the highest level of clearance is allowed to know of, much less enter.

The Mochizuki currently use the forest as part of their pilgrimage and training to become Kannushi in service to the moon. The last step of this process is to perform a ceremonial washing in the waters of Anmon no Taki Falls (after isolating in a dark room alone away from civilization for at least 24 hours) repeating the mystery of Izanagi washing himself and birthing the three kami Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo from the filth of the netherworld. From this point onwards they are considered purified of the contamination of the living realm and thus are fully fledged Kannushi in service to the Moon and it’s facets. In this role they are expected to spend their time researching anything and everything related to their magecraft, maintaining their skills in meditation, prayer, writing, poetry, etiquette, and archery. To the Mochizuki it could be said their clan is very old fashioned and that their mannerisms are very antiquated, with them very often saying a lot of things very formally and giving compliments, but in practice saying little or nothing on their real thoughts on a matter. To the Mochizuki one plans and thinks out what to say before they say it. To speak or act carelessly is taught out of them at a young age.

Even among magi they could be considered exceptional at being very unclear on where they stand or what they think, and their ability to navigate and circumvent a question is not to be underestimated. One example of this is that a standard letter or speech from the Mochizuki is noted to always include a section at the start complimenting the other party (which is almost always hollow or overstated) with some examples going on entire discussion of seemingly praising the other party on recent events and matters before finally getting to the point, saying exactly what the other party wants to hear, but worded in such a way that really is either unclear as to what they mean or commits to almost nothing or the absolute bear minimum that would be needed or socially acceptable. Never expect them to be candid about what they think, as to them a placenta lie will always be told over a potentially disadvantageous truth. In this sense the Mochizuki are masters at both political maneuvering and deception due to their constant disciplined approach to conversation and dialogue in any medium.

Mochizuki relations

The Mochizuki as a group are in many ways an odd duck, they originate from the West, yet if you looked at their relationships it would be hard to tell, as they seemingly have little if anything to do with them. As mentioned prior, the Mochizuki due to how they often can say a lot yet mean nothing or very little can be hard to pin down wether they stand with varying parties, but as they are closely ties with the Onmyōdō group and where the Onmyōdō stands historically can give an idea of their stance on varying figures and groups. The first thing to understand is that the Clock tower have almost no foothold in Japan and what foothold they have has been shrinking over the years. This is due to the fact that relations with the Onmyōdō have always been tense and ever since a "certain group of traitors" set up a ritual in Fuyuki, which regular causes the Onmyōdō to have to worry about not only foreigners causing trouble, but the potential discovery of mystery itself, the relations between the Clock tower and the Onmyōdō have been in free fall for decades (starting to really turn south after the Aozaki, who they thought of as their allies, discovered the 5th true magic and left for the Magus association).

This is not entirely surprising as the absolute easternmost area that the Clock tower has considerable influence is Russia, and generally as a rule the more into South and/or East you get of Britain, in terms of countries (exempting Russia) the less the influence the Clock tower (or any of the magus association, except Atlas, for that matter) has. This falls generally in line with the known feelings about the Clock tower and given the history of the Zelenia with Atlas and the Church (both of which the Mochizuki have the same problems with) this can be said to be a safe assumption in terms of guessing at what their precise thoughts on varying people are. However in the Church's case, ironically the Clock tower are probably considered more of a problem to the Mochizuki than the Church are, as the church has barely any foothold in the moonlight world in Japan to start with. In an entire decade the church may dispatch 30 supernaturally aware members at most to Japan (in terms of the time period of 1980 to 2010 this has generally held true). As such the clock tower, who has repeatedly from the neutral or Democratic faction's insistence tired to insert themselves into the historically spiritual lands of Japan, are a blight in their mind and it is unlikely that this is set to change anytime soon.

This relationship in particular took a nosedive after a certain incident the Bartholmelloi made a power grab which had they committed and the organization followed likely would have started a 4 or 5 group war with the Clock tower between the Onmyōdō group, their splinter faction in the demon Hunter organization (who broke off from them ~1200 AD, yet like Westerners pushing in on their territory about as much as their parent group), The Church, The Wandering Sea (lead by the Zelenia), and possibly the American Magus Group (who have interest in the holy grail and may seize the opportunity). This attempted power play backfired, saw the agent killed, and under no uncertain terms the Clock tower's director was sent a missive that "the Bartholmelloi family is not to set foot on our land or else" by the Onmyōdō. As such during the dismantling of the grail the family was barred from physically being present or their family would be demoted within the organization and punished severely (with the individual present in this hypothetical situation being allowed to die as part of keeping the peace). This has also lead to Japan being seen as a "haven" for sealing designates from the closer tower (although this isn't fully true, the Onmyōdō or others may capture and study them, call in Atlas or the Wandering Sea to deal with them, or ship them back to Europe after their capture as to not deal with the political headache).

The relations that the Mochizuki have with the Wandering Sea, and by proxy the relations Wandering Sea have with the Onmyōdō group are noted to be far more positive than that of the other segments of the magus organization, yet is still decidedly distant. They both respect the faith and loyalty to tradition and the gods the other carries and the attitude of the Wandering Sea, which in contrast with the colonial mindset/style of the Clock tower to insert themselves however possible and say that it's ours (which the Onmyōdō is both inelegant, culturally rude, and very disrespectful), the Wandering Sea are more willing to play the political long game and lower themselves to the level of being mere guests in order to make a benefit in the long run (they are willing to step on their pride to make a gain in the long term). This appeals to the Onmyōdō's sensibilities which reflect that of what the imperial court once was like. To this end, while the Wandering Sea have little actual feet on the ground, they do have dialogue and hope to form enough inroads to make connections to the spiritually and culturally rich lands of China, India, and Japan sometime in the next few decades.

The Mochizuki based on the Onmyōdō group's communications also likely have some manner of relations with the Geomancers of China who practice the elements based around the concept of the seasons (Feng Shui) for means of divination and control of the elements who historically have had a somewhat complicated relationship with the Onmyōdō group in Japan dating back all the may to it's inception, suffice to say the groups are allied at the moment, but that there is a history of both alliance and conflict between the two. On the other hand the relationship with the magical side of the Chinese Taosist despite having been rocky at first is far more stable and a formal alliance between the groups has remained secure, even in spite of events in the mundane world for around the past 150 years. Lastly there may be some manner of relationship with the organizations particularly those based on Buddhism which based on the Onmyōdō group extends those of Indian origin. However, on this end it is unlikely that the Mochizuki are actively part of this negotiations or have any connections personally to Buddhist groups outside of those who are active in Japan as outside of meditative techniques of which they are already well versed they have little in their mind to offer on enlightening themselves to the nature of the moon or ganging new information which could aid them in this process.


Magecraft, Methods, and Lifestyle

To understand the Zelenia and Mochizuki families’ magecraft, first the general structure of the families as followers of the lunar gods and goddesses must be considered. The Zelenia family could be called the family of warriors, from the very beginning their lives are structured around their roles as followers of the Selene and Artemis/Diana primarily. They (nor the Mochizuki) do not marry (or face dire consequences from their patrons who power their thaumaturgy), for their marriage vows are sworn already to the moon during their coming of age ceremony. When they conceive or seek to have child it is done within their family’s private controlled forest in a special glen and the female Zelenia (or the Mochizuki’s female partner) has their face covered the entire time, they are never allowed to know either see their partner during or after the act, nor allowed to know or be alerted as to who their partner was by anyone (including the partner himself, thus requiring they remove those memories from him if possible, and adopting him into the Mochizuki family if applicable). After this is done they do not partake in their regular hunts during this time, are not allowed to use their magecraft for any reason, but pray every night for at least 1 hour, give offerings upon the full moon, and then return to the glen with a handmaiden to give birth.

For the Mochizuki Clan the practice is similar, except with some twists, the male is never allowed to see or know the female or their name and they are kept, but remain separate from their partner for the 9 months of pregnancy, and never allowed to see their child after that (also potentially including killing them or in some case adopting them into the Zelenia or Mochizuki (although this position is perfunctory, as only those with a bloodline tied to the groups can use their unique arts, thus those married into it will be limited by this fact)). Based on if the child is a boy or a girl, they are separated into one of the two clans, however rather than being raised by their mother/father (who they are only given to briefly as to be given a name if they are alive) they are instead raised by the head of family (due to the danger that nobody really knows who is related to who, marriage between the clans while frequent is regulated by mandates to bring in new blood into the families to keep genetic diversity up and mitigate dangers of possible inbreeding and such).

The head of family is determined by the person with the highest connection and affinity for their family's magecraft and after killing the prior head of family, they offer the previous head to the holy beast of their family as a sacrifice. After the beast eats them it begins to integrate the crest into it’s flesh and blood and is made to bear young, this child doesn’t have the crest due to not fully being integrated into it’s flesh. Then the parent is killed and the section of it's flesh with the crest in it is taken and the crest transferred into the new recipient. This process which at minimum is undergone at age 13, possibly as old as 17 or 18, for the donor is incredibly painful and may result in deformities or even them dying (most often resulting in them being physically weakened or crippled), however in this case the family may retrieve the crest and try again if the donor dies.

The life of a child in the Zelenia family is dominated by being taught in the moon from a young age, being taught of Hecate, Selene, and Artemis, of other lunar goddesses, being trained in the arts of archery, hunting, and combat. In the case of the Mochizuki family instead of the focus on combat, they are taught of the moon, and of Tsukuyomi, Chang Xi, and Chang’e (as well as in the people of the lunar tribe told of in Japanese myth of which it is said that the Mochizuki family has performed numerous searches over the years for any relics related to them). They learn archery although that is more practiced in the eastern version of mental focus and discipline rather than hunting, they learn of rituals and traditions, and mental discipline and well thought out dialogue becomes as normal as breathing to them. If the Zelenia family are warriors who follow the path of the moon, then the Mochizuki family are ritualists and shamans who study the arts of the moon. The Zelenia family as a result is known for their fighting abilities and their skill in killing beasts and such, while the Mochizuki family is considered more powerful spell casters and able to craft or imbue abilities or concepts on weapons as to make mystic codes.

At age 6 for both families, the children have their magic circuits awakened, and are given the apprentice’s rite (a form of self-hypnosis they use at that age until they undergo a rite), it is at this time the characteristic rune which marks their service and bond with the moon is branded on children of the Zelenia or Mochizuki clan member on the dominant arm (see image 1). When they reach anywhere from 13 to 15 they are sent to undergo a series of tests which test their devotion, skill, and abilities. Should they pass they are then given the next rite, which grants them even more of the family’s power in the case of the Zelenia family this is the Hunter’s right, and in the case of the Mochizuki family this is the Devout’s rite. Just like with the apprentice’s rite they are then branded with another rune to mark their progress on the arm which wasn’t banded at the start (the in-dominant arm), the exact rune varies based on the clan. However, in truth the runes are actually meaningless, the passage of the rite is what truly matters, the rune being branded on one of their arms is merely a visual way of signifying status and rank (see image 2 for the Zelenia’s rune and image 3 for the Mochizuki’s rune). The only rites higher than this are those held by those who hold the crest of their family, the Zelenia refer to this as Phoebe’s rite and the Mochizuki refer to it as Mikoto’s rite (as for what earning that rite entails see easier notes on inheritance of the crest).

The two families magecraft works by them assigning certain ideas and concepts associated with the moon (illusions, divination, wisdom, the hunt, madness (lunacy (Caligula)), reflections, the passage of time, renewal/regeneration, magic, and such) onto different deities and by invoking them with magecraft and mysteries (typically considered a form of spiritual evocation) borrowing upon those abilities or concepts. Much like dead apostles, some segments of their power wane or wax based on the moon itself, and based on where they are some mysteries may be more or less powerful due to being close to their source. However, the nature of the magecraft of the Zelenia’s (and Mochizuki's) power means that while they are very powerful (some being able to rival executors of the church in physical prowess and most being able to have their bodies as if it is constantly being reinforced), they all live on a strict timeline, past a certain age they start to go insane (in the sense that their worldview starts to become inhuman).

Regarding the insanity which begins to grow both with age and continued use of magecraft, it is an unavoidable fact of their magecraft and eventually culminates in physical mutations and their mentalities, physical form, and world view becoming beast like at best or inhuman in more rare cases. This is due to that they as an act of coming of age become “married” to the moon and thus their senses and lives become intertwined with it. As those born to either clan age they become beings more strange and foreign to this world, eventually becoming beasts of the moon, whose logic defies that of the earth. The more inhuman their minds or bodies become as they age, the more enlightened they are to the moon and it's nature, as such than more kin they are with the moon. In this respect, this may explain the sense of kinship that the Zelenia and Mochizuki family have with practitioners of beast magecraft, or those who follow zoology as despite hunting beasts, they themselves are kin with and destined to become beasts themselves. The absolute longest that anyone ever lasted in this state was up to 63 and it is thought not possible to make it past 65, and most don’t live past 55 (even living to 60 while human is a feat, the guy who lived till 63, the last 3 years of his life were in a hospital bed as he needed to be feed and maintained via IV, he was near constantly in struggle with himself to stay human).

Another major consequence of this power is that there are set conditions upon their usage of it. The consequences of straying from the faith in the moon are known to be as “minor” as having severe incurable illness (which is tethered to the soul, not the body), spells backfiring regularly and sometimes catastrophically, magic circuits overheating and rupturing, insanity, and even range to literally devolving into beasts (even at young ages). This is because the foundation of their power is that of the moon, and their body and magic circuits with it are bound to the whims of the beings connected to the moon. Essentially they pray onto the moon and the divine spirits, and similar to a prayer onto the world (summoning / spiritual evocation) it is answered, due to their faith and service, as well as being connected to the divine spirits before they were separated from this world. To go against that faith is to deny service to the spirits who granted blessing upon you and through the same channels which they grant their blessings and power upon one, they can also bestow curses and doom upon someone so foolish. These consequences also can result from other breeches of the tenants given, such as falling in love with one other than the moon (even those they Zelenia and Mochizuki marry, they never truly can love, (aside from their own kin or others the moon has affection for) the only ones they can love is the moon who they married).
