Re-reading Stay Night

Rate this Entry
I forgot how long the prologue was.

Man, after about 2 years of reading it the first time, it definetly feels very different. The intrigue is no longer there, of course, but it's nice to re-read it knowing all I do now, having it already make sense. The music is top notch, as is the art. It isn't bringing back times past though, that's for certain.

I've been trying to re-read it recently as well, primarily since my formative reads of it were in English, back when the translation of it was first released (2008-9?). Equipped with proper Japanese literacy, I decided it'd be a fun project to go through. That said, eventually it fell by the wayside given all the other things I take upon myself to do in my free-time.

It is as you say though. Despite the new language, it's not exactly bringing back the past.

Maintaining interest in rereading FSN feels like a difficult task in itself. I think that challenging yourself by trying to spot the foreshadowing or the details that you didn't really remember might be a good way to go about it. Or, if you have TM-itis, taking notes and marking references for future arguments lul

God that weekend I powered through it really was more than a decade ago, where has the time gone

I still enjoy pulling up and going through particular scenes now and again. It hasn’t lost its charm for me. It feels richer now being able to understand more context and depth.

I wouldn’t just replay through the entire thing though. I just don’t do that in general for the most part.

I think Blog comments don't leave notifications. I wonder if it's just for me.

Regardless, I really treasured those weeks reading it, and this attempt at re-reading it (actually the 2nd, but the first fell by the wayside because Nasu no nihingo ha mudzukasi) did not capture so much of what I felt. I keep enjoying Stay Night after the fact as it is an amazing novel after all, but to me it's a read it once kind of thing. I'm notoriously bad with replaying stuff and this is super difficult.

The lack of intrigue, which was about *the* main pushing force, meant that I just didn't return after the prologue. A lot of the dialogue is well framed exposition, which when you already have it, loses a lot of its luster. Not only that, the tension I could feel in the moments the writing hit its peak came too long after, and knowing what's happening makes it much duller.

Anything I try to say just comes back to the same unfortunate point. And it feels probably worse because Type-Moon's works, to me, are a special kind of good that can only be had once, but are so sublime, that now that I've read most of it, feels like they're over.

This is not true, in fact, because there's much I haven't experienced, IE Mahoyo and KnK. I'm not that interested in stuff like Extra or SF if I'm completely honest. But it doesn't help because not only is there a bitchin' language barrier, and let me say it again: なす「漢字を知らない」の散文は凄く過度に難しだ (My japanese's profound noob pwning levels of suckage emphasizes this statement further), but unfunny tangent aside, it makes me fear the moment there actually isn't anything else that truly draws me in like that.

Maybe the amount of knowledge I accrue from the community will make such intrigue impossible, or Fate/MoneyPrinter#69 is as uninteresting as the previous 20, or I'm too bitter about a skirt length to actually enjoy anything else that comes out every blue moon.

This rant took to long to say I'm a crochety fuck.
