Some things I noticed in fate fanfic

Rate this Entry
I've been reading a lot of fanfic recently and noticed a couple things. Since my firends are tired of listening to me talk about fate I'm here to scream it into the void. These are my personal observations and opinions so take them with a grain(or two) of salt.

Fate crossovers seem uniquely hard to do, at least in one direction. In general it seems like the melding of the two (or more) settings works best when it's one thing crossing over into fate. Not a lot of settings can handle fate stuff but fate is really good at assimilating other things. I really became aware of this when I read some fate/worm crossover stuff and noticed that whenever it was worm stuff in fate the story just kinda worked better. I'm guessing this is probably because fate's magic system is robust enough that you can make reasonable assumptions about how any given thing might interact with it.

A lot of the fics I've read either take Shiro's whole "I want to be a hero" thing and either accept it at face value or totally tear it apart. There's relatively little that actually investigates it even as much as the original VN. In general he's treated a lot more as a black slate then an actual character. I realize that he's originally a VN protagonist so there's a limit to how much character he *can* have but at this point I'm willing to bet that more people know him from UBW or HF (where he is less of a blank slate) then the VN.

A big point where fics seem to stagnate or die looks to be right around the Iliya/berserker fight after the church. Not sure why that is.

There's not nearly enough Ereshkegal fics out there.

These are just some things that bugged me after spending to much time procrastinating. If you have things to add or disagree with me I'd be glad to hear it as long as it's kept civil
