Hero A exists and Hero B takes over his identity to accomplish his purposes. Look at our examples:
1) Oberon Vortigern: Faerie Britain's doomsday system titled Vortigern (B) summons itself wearing the skin of Pan-Human Heroic Spirit Oberon (A).
2) Hephaestion Mnemosyne: Chaldea's log device titled Mnemosyne (B) summons itself wearing the skin of Heroic Spirit "Hepheastion's nameless sister" (A).
3) Lady Avalon: A weird version of Merlin from some other timeline (B) erased her True Name from her Saint Graph. No A here until they reveal she's Fou.
4) Nine-Tattoo Liz: Li Jing (A) was dying in battle and gave his Saint Graph to the Elizabeth Bathory (B) who was fighting alongside him. This is our most traditional Pretender example Nasu's description. Arguably the only traditional example, even.
5) Tenochtitlan: The city Tenochtitlan (B) contains the shrines of Tlaloc (A1) and Huitzilopochtli (A2) in her Templo Mayor, so she gets access to their names and some of their powers.
6) Faerie Knight Tristan: Depends on Ascension.
7) Typhon Ephemeros: The legend of the Ephemeral Fruit (B) is entirely about her getting eaten by Typhon (A), so she naturally gets Typhon as an interface for her powers.
8) Alessandro di Cagliostro: Cagliostro (B) has Fraud as a Skill and makes good use of it to mask his Class, appearing as the non-existing Caster Cagliostro in Heian's Holy Grail War and the non-existing Avenger Cagliostro Alter in Id's Trials. He's an off-standard "born Pretender" because his (A)s don't exist, but Fraud lets him freely make (A)s with his own name.
