IRUn's House of Whatever

ItsaRandomReviewBlog: It's Almost as if my Opinion Matters! - AKA IRUn does KEY Animu PART 1

Because I frankly feel like reviewing something episode-by-episode again because it's been way too freakin' long since I have.

Yup. As the title indicates I'll be doing me some KEY, specifically Clannad. I will say that I won't do a review for what have already seen prior to this little venture because I don't feel like rewatching shit, so that excludes Angel Beats! and AIR

Anywho, this'll be a blind review. I'm going to dive right into the show with no prior knowledge of the series aside from certain few and far-between SUPER SERIOUS SPOILERIFFIC DETAILS like that one girl owns a pet pig and rides a scooter.

That said, I know nothing more of it and will post my thoughts and observations as they happen, and will hopefully try to scrounge up something enlightening/meaningful/and or entertaining from it all.

Alright then, episode 1!

Spoiler:

The girl is randomly, enigmatically babbling to herself under her breath as she just stands there in the middle of the road...

Oh yeah, she's totally fine. Just Tuesday for us here.

Wooing mentally unstable girls by lieu of meeting their ramblings with your own counter-philosophy works great at picking up chicks.

...what? Don't knock it 'til ya try it, you judgmental people. It's not taking advantage of them if they say yes even if they aren't in a healthy state of mind.

...moving on.

(That said, the transition between grayscale to full-color was a nice touch. Overall, this was a rather decent way to introduce Tomoya and Nagisa. The music helped set the tone as well, so points to that.)

Could be worse. They could be sodomizing you.

...... ( ._.)

(Actually, this scene and the follow-up were hilarious.)

Six minutes in before the weird shit starts getting thrown at us.

You're slipping, KEY.

Tomoyo FUCKING Sakagami. Ne'er do-wells beware. She will end you.

I don't give a shit if this scene jumped the shark and killed SOD. It was too awesome for me to care about that.

Thanks, KyoAni.

BTW GIANT PHALLIC POMPADOUR HAIR

Didn't I just say she would end you? No one ever listens in these here parts to my advice.

(Get used to Sunohara being the butt of the joke.)

My God. There's more than one of them.

Mmm'kay. Slight warning bells going off in my head here regarding this family dynamic.

WHY?!

WHY DO YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO MELANCHOLIC, YOU LITTLE CANDY BALL THINGS?!

...why?

So yeah. First episode and it's actually not bad at all. Some basic introductions here and there to the characters, with a few hints dropped here and there coupled with some nicely flowing animation and some genuinely great moments make for a fairly strong first episode. It's KEY, so I expect it to get much more emotional later on, but then again that's pretty much a give.

Bring it on, KyoAni! I went through AIR with (almost) no problems, and I'll do it again! Come at me, bro!

With that said, on to the next installment.

I've recently been going through the various Key anime, with Clannad being the best then Kanon 2006, and while the "everyone is sick forever" thing gets old after a bit. They are some of the best romance anime period [in my opinion.] And are you going to do Kanon 2002? That was some awful, awful, stuff.

AIR's ending was...kind of confusing if you're just going with the anime version. I remember that I raged a bit after it, too, and only after giving it some careful though did I realize that there actually was a point to it all.

    ...maybe.

...The ending is still hard to follow, though. Especially with all the ambiguous teasers thrown at the end regarding everyone's ultimate fates. But if a crow can go up into the sky to chase after the freed soul of a dead girl then fine by me. Thank goodness the movie's ending was a little more satisfying. That and the designs in the movie are (for the most part) kind of more eye-appealing than the originals.

I'm still not entirely sure what happened in the end.

Now, if Kanon 2002 really is that bad then I think I'll have some fun reviewing that, assuming I get around to it.

I'm waiting for the Little Busters anime that has been green lit finally.

But Clannad was fun. Very emotional, but if you got through Air, you should be fine. However, Clannad After Story is where it is impossible to go through without crying unless you lack a soul. And I think Key endings are all confusing.

Clannad (and After Story) was probably one of my favorite anime series of all time. I never played the game, sadly, and I'll admit to that shamefully, but I think that the anime still managed to be a great show with equal parts heartwarming and comedy. And sad, and melancholic, and emotional.
    So incredibly emotional.

Still, the themes developed really touched my heart. I've heard someone once say that Clannad's theme was "family". Maybe that's not entirely accurate, but it's still very much real.

When it comes to the animes, Angel Beats! > Air > Clannad > Kanon for me. AB! is just generally tighter, I think, than the others because you don't question the "what the hell is going on?" quite as much with the ending--because that's not particularly important as it were to the character arcs. I would put Clannad ahead of Air, but I thought that the comparative length actually detracted from Air, which has a tighter focus (...I guess I like things tight, giggity). Be warned: Clannad anime has a similar "What?" issue with the climax of After Story as the Air anime does. Game makes sense, anime takes a little hoop jumping to get straight.

I can't wait to see how they handle Little Busters! since I think the twist in that one is about as confusing as AB! and actually has more direct bearing on what's going on.
