Quick Question.

Rate this Entry
Is it bad that one of the reasons I'm hanging out over at my friend's house lately is because he has a PlayStation3 and the Sly Cooper collection, and thus is the only way I can play the game?

Because, um, if it is, I might have a problem. Since I don't plan to stop. These games are addicting, how did I miss out on them when they were first released?

(For the record, our most recently released game system is the Wii, and sadly the only game I own for the Sly Cooper trilogy is the second game. Any chance I can find old copies of the PS2 releases?)

So totally hounding him to get Sly 4.

First, you'd have to define "bad". XP
I do the same when visiting cousins, since I only have my PS1, GBA SP, and Wii...and the Wii isn't technically mine, either.

Old copies of PS2 releases would require either a store that deals with used games like that, or... well, ordering them online.

And if it's bad, don't try to be right!

I wanted to do this with my friend for a whole bunch of games, but too bad he lives far away...it's not bad at all :3

Either one of these methods, or even, ah, "ordering" them online could work. If you don't want to mess around with new systems/consoles, emulation is an option. A good laptop nowadays ought to be able to pull that off, if you tweak the emulator settings a little. Available all the time!

I suppose the question is really, which option would be the cheapest, since I'm kind of operating under a budget. Still can't afford to go out and spend large amounts of money until Dad manages to get a steady, well paying job.

In which case, it's probably emulation and euphemistic 'online ordering'.

Emulation would be the cheapest, but that's a rather grey area so probably online. You can find them from $10~$20 new if you know where to look.

Hm, not a bad price, that. I'll have to look into it. Thanks!

Depending on your computer's specs, it might be possible to do it through emulation. You'd need something from around 2008-2009 to get good playable speeds though, probably.

If you'd like to know more, holler at me over AIM sometime.

Meh, me and my friends did this all the time. Half the reason we became friends was because our mutual friend (my dorm neighbor and old friend who I hadn't seen in years) had a ps3 and plenty of games such as castle crashers and MvC3.

I thought this kind of thing was normal.

I have a feeling that "ordering" was a euphemism for "torrenting", for at least some of them....

It's not like anyone will still sell these games first-hand anyway, and I don't see the point in giving money to a second-hand dealer rather than just downloading the things directly (particularly since a downloaded version of the game will probably be easier to use with an emulator). The original creator gets the same amount of money either way....

Welcome to the life of kids who didn't have veegees, beamu. It was a staple of playdates, back in the day.

Emulation of a PS2 isn't something you can do very easily though. There's a lot of crap to emulate, and you need both at least a good CPU (Dual-core strongly recommended) as well as an actual videocard (No integrated graphics will handle it).

I know my PC from around 2007-2008 could do some games fine, but 3D games were much slower. Then I built my current rig about a year ago and it's run everything I've thrown at the emulator very, very nicely.

It'll be shrunk down to fit this frame, but if you view the direct link to the below image, you'll see it's a whopping 2560x1792. Not bad for a game that originally ran 640x448!

You also get a cookie if you know what game it is.

Honestly, it still depends. My laptop is dual core, but majorly crappy, and it has integrated graphics. I can still get it to emulate FFX at a reasonable speed so long as I pay attention to the settings.

True, but FFX is actually fairly light, not to mention tested to death, since it was basically the "killer app" they tested against.

Try something a bit later in the PS2's lifetime and it's probably a different story.

Plus, if your laptop was made in January 2010 or later, it's got one of intel's on-die graphics controllers (HD1000/HD2000/HD3000)... which are way, way better than the old Intel GMAs.
